Building A ELR Rifle

I've often entertained the thought of an ELR gun. Just something that I might shoot once or twice a season, with friends just because it would be fun. I haven't made the commitment yet because that's a lot of money for a "once in a while" gun, but I have safes full of guns i haven't shot in forever as I burn up barrels on my favorites.

This thread isn't helping.

I guess I'm afraid I'd like it too much, lol! So I'll just sit back and watch y'all do it.

Don't overlook the sightron s8. It's a very capable scope for the money. The only thing from valdada I have is their adjustable cant mount.

I fireformed a couple of cases yesterday after our Match at Tomball.
The sizing Die I made is going to work great.
I have 900 Berger 300 grain bullets and 80 pieces of new Lapua brass, the dies are ready, I still need the optics.

I will probably go with the March Genisis. The only draw back I can see in this package is the cost. You can mount it on a Zero Rail, the reticle is always optically centered, and the optics are the best.

It can be sighted for 200 yards or 2000 yards.

A fellow at the range yesterday suggested I mount the barreled action in a chassis instead of the Shehane Tracker. Why?
He said it would “look the part” more than the Shehane.

Nice.
Was getting first first firing on some new brass with new barrel and getting some dope at 1525 to 2300 yards Thursday with my 338.

I would keep it in a stock personally. I dont like the vibrations from a chassis personally. A lot of guys would disagree but I've shot both. If I was doing it over, I'd look seriously at the McCarty stock from Foundation. I've shot a couple and am amazed how much they soak it up. Mine are in Stock in the pic

Stock or chassis doesn’t matter to me as long as there’s enough adjustment to get it how I like.

I'll be interested in your thoughts on the March. I took a couple buddies out to my range this Sunday for a tune up before an upcoming ELR matches. I was shooting my back up rifle in 6.5x55GWI. First round impacts at 1760 with plenty of elevation left in my scope. 51.5 moa

I am looking to install an adjustable comb and adjustable recoil pad on the Shehane Stock.
It involves mounting some tubes in the rear with side locks.

I could take some measurements and cut a recess in the top of the butt and mound an adjustable vertical comb in the same manner.

I will do the adjustable recoil pad first, then see what would be the best approach on the comb.

You can see how moondog has his stock setup like my chassis to get the barrel lined with the shoulder.
Better than the other rifles in his picture.

Makes recoil nice with minimal deflection and easy to self spot impacts.

Rad systems and cheek piece hardware don't like to play well together so to speak.
There's not a lot of room where the rear guide rod is in the stock for cheek piece in relation to the RAD system.
As far as cheek piece hardware Masterclass hardware has the smallest footprint that I've seen, but you will need to inlet for thumb wheel.
Hardware is also magnetic so you can wiggle cheek piece out leaving center thread rod in place to pull bolt if needed.

Probably you should thread an eight ball for a bolt knob as well!

On a serious note Jackie, when you go to develop loads, you are going to find the brass takes a few firings before it reaches full diameter. It's common for example to settle on 101 grains for a load, then the next cycle they will be hot, and it will want 100 and so on... Takes about 3 hits in my experience. Just FYI, but between that and green barrels seasoning in you may chase your tail for a bit. Fun cartridge, capable of precision that it shouldn't be at that size. My first one was on Retumbo and shot great at 2990 and was a hot ish load. We ran rl 33 a couple barrels and it did good with less pressure. Vit570 has been the best of what I've experienced so far. 300 otm berger in about 15 or jumping somewhere between a little and 15 you should love it.

Tom

I agree with Tom, mine took 2-3 firings before I ever touched the shoulder or body.
I was tempted to try the Vit powder, but it meters like Lincoln logs out of my measure. I've got enough 33 for a couple of barrels. After that, I'll move to the vit.

My 338 edge brass is the same.
N570 is awesome in the bigger 338’s but I use N170 for first two loads in brass to get it
fireformed and the base settled at moderate pressures.

Thankfully my V3 handles those big beautiful N570 kernels well.
