Building a 600 yd. shooter

Hammer47

I suffer fools poorly.
Am in the process of building a 600 yd. shooter and need a bit if advice. Panda big bore action, Krieger 28 inch .284 bbl with a 9 twist. I have on hand 20 boxes of Sierra 168 MK bullets and a bunch of reloader 17 that need to be used so my question is.........have 2 reamers, a 7 IHMSA with a water capy. of 46.5 gns or a 284 Winchester.
Since I am only going to 600 yds I would really rather not have to feed the 284 so do you think the 7 IHMSA would have the volume to accurate at that distance with the 168's?
The reason I have limited myself to these 2 offerings is that I own both reamers, the powder the bullets and die sets.
Many thanx.............gary.

Gary, IMHO the modified 300 Savage case just doesn't have the poop to be competitive with a 7mm bullet. In 6mm it would be a different story.

The other point is that the finite accuracy at distance really starts in the quality of the cases. You can get high quality cases for the .284 (or make them from high quality cases that exist). With the IHMSA caliber, you are pretty much stuck with WW brass.

Another vote for the grand old .284 Winchester..
Feed it, they don't eat much for what they give out...

What kind of ACCURATE barrel life should I expect from the 284 with full throttle loads with the SMK 168?
Not talking about moronic blue pill loads, just the velocity necessary for best performance.

I would bet you get 2000 pretty easy. I have worn out a couple 284 barrels shooting a mix of 168s and 180s they were lights out to 18-1900 and then x count started to dwindle at the end of the day as they got dirty. Herb

This is about right. My .284 Shehane went 1658 shooting full power loads with 180 Hybrids. I got it pretty hot a couple of times when we ran two relays with provided pullers. So, a .284 Win treated a little better should hit 2k.

Well 2,000 rounds is right handy as I have 20 boxes of 168 SMK's......... Sounds like a plan.
