Is a 6.5-284 too much for new shooter?

Been shooting 308 and 6 creed for about a year now, most have been 600 yd matches

I have had a lot of fun using a bipod with both and can shoot 1/2 moa groups most days. My reloading experience started and has focused on both of these calibers since.

A friend and experienced F shooter contacted me regarding a reasonably priced high quality f open in 6.5-284. After some searching, the 6.5 is well respected but has a rep of going through barrels, and was told i would need rests etc.

I have done a lot of reading over the last year on accurate shooter but would like to hear about the experiences of an average shooter like me.

What is this "reasonably priced" F-Open rig composed of? What action, trigger, stock, barrel and round count on that barrel? The 6.5 x 284 is a VERY accurate cartridge. It can be used reasonably well at 1000 yards and extremely well inside that. The reason I am saying "reasonably well" at 1000 yards, is that there are several better cartridges, most are based off the 6.5 x 284.
You will need a decent rest for F-Open. It does NOT have to be a S.E.B. NEO, but I can tell you that you WILL do better with a "Joy-Stick-Operated" front rest than without one. There are some good used joy-stick rests that pop up on this site from time to time and you will be well served with one. Barrel life in F-Open for a 6.5 x 284 with SLOW powders are about 1400 or so rounds. With faster powders, barrel life is in the vicinity of 1000 or so rounds.

I hope this helps.. But I would like to know what that rifle's components are..

I don't know of that stock. But the rest of the package is well known and of excellent quality. I am assuming it is an H-S Precision stock, of which there are many. Nonetheless, depending on the stock for use in F-Open, H-S Precision makes very good stocks.. So you may very well be on to something here. But find out what the round count on the barrel is. Remember the life is fairly short compared to other cartridges.

Is that a Precision rifle and tool stock, or an HS Precision stock?????

BIG difference..........

The devil is in the details.....

Phil.

All good equipment. I would get a 284 bushing die with a bushing for the 6.5. After the barrel wears out, you can rebarrel to straight 284. Then all you have to do is neck up your brass, and get a bigger bushing.
