Building a 6 BR on a Savage

Hi everyone,

I need a stock, and am looking for some direction.

I'm building a Savage 11G into a 6mm BR Norma, with one of Fred Moreo's SSS barrels in a 1-10 twist, 26" long. This is going to be a fun rifle for shooting 200-300 yrds mostly, and occationally longer as soon as I can build my skill level up to the task. I mostly shoot my .262 nk 6x47 .080" short at 100-200yards and get very nice groups, for my skill level).

Anyway I am wanting more of a BR or F-class stock for the Savage. I'll probably go with a laminate since money is a factor. I can't narrow down much more in shooting styles because I'm not familular with the rule's on different classes. I'm not concerned with keeping within any weight class yet. this is going to be shot prone and/or on a bench. I don't plan on carrying this rifle through the woods to shoot critters.

Thanks for any help,
Dan

You need to decide if you want to use a bipod or rest on the front end, and whether you will use a rear bag. If a bipod, go for a narrower front end. If you want to shoot off front rest and rear bag, go for a 3" flat front end and a stock with a flat on the underside of the buttstock. That will track much better. Look at the Savage drop-in Baby Tracker stock from Bill Shehane and the #001 or #008 from Richard's Custom Rifles. Bruce Baer also makes nice laminated stocks. Look at the various Guns of the Week, http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweekarchive.html for photos of these stocks.

We don't recommend Richard's Microfit Stocks of California, not to be confused with stocks made by Richard's Custom Rifles in Virginia). We purchased a Savage stock from the Microfit folks. The inletting was very bad, requiring extensive glass and epoxy work to permit the installation of the rear pillar. The wood was also extremely porous and grainy and the exterior, which looked like it had been cut with chisels) required many, many hours of manual sanding. Do yourself a favor and go with Baer, Richard's Customs of Virginia, or Shehane.

Here is another vote for Bruce Baers stocks. They are straight and cheaper than most.

www.baercustomrifles.com

he has 25 stock patterns and can mix and match forends and butts as he,really his wife Gerry) does all the duplicating etc.

You can see my light gun stock on guns of the week ,week 3)

I'm currently looking at doing a 6BR on a Savage SS large shank action. Bounty hunter...did the Baer stock come finished like that???

If not, what did you use on it...looks great.

As for the chamber...I also am looking into the .269-ish necks. Pac-Nor lists a .262 neck and man oh man would that require a bunch of unnecessary turning.

I'm after accuracy as this is to be a 300 and 400 yard egg shooting rig, so I'm getting a 13" twist to shoot the 68's. that gives me a great variety of the finest custom bullest to pick from. Figure an egg at a 3" long oval. That is 3/4 minute at 400. So if I can keep it in the .2's at 100 I'll be ok. The rest will be up to the wind and my ability to read it.

I'm on a similar path, I just got a reply from Sharp Shooter Supply. They have two 6br reamers, one with a .265 neck and the other with a .271

A lot has gone on with my build since the 15th...I've ordered an 8 twist rather than the 12. I did ballistics tables out to 400 and the 105 VLD absolutely kicks the 68's butt in drift. By more than double.
It came down to .1xx" groups that drift 24" at 400 or .2xx" groups that drift 10" at 400 in the same wind. I'll take the drift advantage on egg sized targets.
I also had to go with .262" neck. Can't afford my own reamer and I wanted a tight neck, yes, I know the whole .272" story) so .262" it is. The Lapua brass I got today will last years and you only have to turn it once. It'll give me something to do while I'm waiting on my barrel.
