Budget Ammo Is A Waste

Take this for what you paid for it but all you guys with the cheap ammo for “practice” mind set are flat wrong.
While not the cheapest, you want to practice with what you shoot matches with, if you shoot matches.
How, exactly, do you get better at shooting in the wind if you practice with ammo that likely handles wind and holdoff entirely differently than the match ammo? Easy, you don’t or end up with a lot of incorrect data/experience.
All this if your priority is skills improvement over fun shooting.
you know Tim, that if my "practice" ammo will at least hold the 10 ring.. that's good enough for me.. seems to work ya know

Sure, understandable.
You, are experienced, and your practice ammo is a cut above.
I should have probably been clearer but my post was really directed at many that shoot “CCI” , mid grade Wolf, etc. stuff.
You get down around there and performance falls off fast.

a group of us retired guys shoot long Range 22 LR once a week. We may shoot 300+ rounds each. We have found Eley Contact work very well at $5.25 a box ( $5.00 / box and free shipping if you buy a case from Killough), it shoots way above it's price. When I shoot up my Tac 22 and CCI SV. All I will buy is Contact and SK Long Range.

I had a pure magic brick of Polar Biathlon and in my CZ it was just perfect--entered my very first match and finished 3rd out of a pack of pros at 50yd BR match--well..I have enough for two more matches then I am back to searching ...had two lots of center X that are shooting like CCi std--that $ is just down the drain--it comes down to lot number I also had some SK Semi Auto that shot very well way above what is is supposed to do
With a great lot of ammo I look good--it is EASY to shoot very well-I never have to think of my hold or cheek weld or all the other details--they just go in the x -with marginal or a just ok lot I struggle like we all do and second guess everything. Knowing this now--when I find that next crazy good lot I will be buying all I can haul

Some of us have other, not as precise rifles (Marlin .22 lever action, Henry .22 lever action) with 4X scopes which are fun to shoot at 25 yards even with cheap ammo. Federal Auto-Match comes to mind. 325 rounds for 28.99 at Wal-Mart. LOL! ANY shooting is better than NO shooting.

I shot these two groups yesterday at 25 yards. One is Winchester Super X HP. The other is 1990 Federal Gold Match Target. I can draw several conclusions from this experience.

The circles parts are the groups. Other holes are sight adjustments.

Tonight I think I slipped down into the rabbit hole...

I heard rumor of a place that sold 22 target ammo. I found it. An old garage. Open 2 hours a week.

Parking lot full. Stepped in and was surrounded by position and BR shooters. Guys in thier retirement.

Owner just had a knee done so he isn't shipping now. But had customers from maryland and Virginia buying 5-6 cases at a time. Yup, way outta my pay grade!

Guy was very kind to me. I bought some Eley green, orange and yellow to test. I would have tried SK and LApua but it only sells by the brick and I am testing. I am sure it will outshoot the Walmart stuff I have used recently. :)

I think I will visit again just to meet people, as they hang out and talk and it was like being in 1970 again.

I guess I need to learn who Bert is haha

I'm a long way from SW PA though
Berts Garage. He has been supplying match RF for a good 20 years, sends out e-mails. Never bought from him personally but friends have, he has some querky procedures as I recall. Mostly ELEY.

If you like the guy don't tell everyone he is sitting there with 50K worth of ammo in his garage... More money that most branch banks.

Just saying.....
Ill take down my post if you take down yours. Let me know

After shooting a very accurate new rifle for nine months, I have finally come to the conclusion that budget ammo cost more money than it saves. You end up chasing your tail, modifying gear and shooting technique, only to find out it was only the cheap ammo after shooting just a few shots of the good stuff. Interestingly one day I ran a broad tuner sweep with the cheap stuff and found a spot where it shot well. Two days later without touching anything it was back to crap. Laughing at me!

Time to sell off several bricks of the elcheepo, suck it up, and just buy the good stuff for practice.
What brand of elcheapo ammo do you have for sale and how much?

Truly, if you are "really" practicing, how can you use anything but what you shoot with in a match? If not, how do you know if the 50 you just shot, was a bad round, a bad wind call or if you f--cked up on the trigger?
