Bucking the trend with a 308 Varmint Rifle

The timing of the earlier thread about 308 varmint rifles was interesting........just so happened that I had one on order. I debated buying another NSS Pre-fit and a donor savage rifle from a pawn shop but didn't feel like putting in the effort (read, lazy).....Next I tried to find a Tikka varmint rifle in 308.....they exist but are pretty hard to come by......then I decided to just search for any 308 varmint rifle actually available and in stock.

Oh yeah, I should mention that I was trying to keep the cost of the rifle around $1000.....

I had a Savage varmint rifle in 308 but ended up using that action for a 223 AI build. I wanted to try something totally different....I've got extensive experience with Savage and Remington....Never considered a Browning....until I came across the X-Bolt Varmint....I liked how it looked, I liked the 60 degree bolt throw, I liked the adjustable stock, I liked the fact that it came with a muzzle break..,....(I wear hearing protection whenever I shoot and wanted to tame the 308 recoil down some too)....I liked the heavy fluted barrel and the adjustable trigger.....All these things prompted me to give it a shot....literally.

Upon receipt of the rifle I filled the buttstock with loose .224 caliber bullets to increase the weight even more. The rifle won't be carried around that much....probably just from the truck to the bench mostly. I wanted it heavy to keep the punishment down for extended shooting sessions. I suspect it'll be a pussycat.....Topped off with my new favorite scope, an Athlon Ares 2.5-15x50 FFP fastened down with 20 MOA Leupold bases and this thing is ready for action.......I had to modify the position of the rail under the rifle and put some rubber spacers in there to fasten the bi-pod to the fore end......The only bi-pod adapter I have like that is already in use. But that thing is solid! Not worried about it one bit

None of this stuff will mater if the rifle won't shoot!......Time to load up some break-in/test loads.....Fingers crossed that I didn't make a big mistake!

what are you planning on for loads?
The hornady amax line is pretty soft and would probably expand on coyotes and such but i am not sure if the 155 a max is still available. 155 amax over varget would be my first attempt if you can find some.

I'm in pretty good shape as far as components are concerned. I've got Varget but am holding on to what I have for my 6xc. I'll be using IMR4064 and RL15 for the 308. I've got more bullet options but these are what I'll be using since I've got plenty......I'll have a target load and a varmint load.....hopefully one load will do both!

As to what varmints I'm after, well, anything from a prairie dog to a coyote to a deer. We go west at least once a year for p-dogs and I'm trying to add another tool.....My 223AI and 204 Ruger can handle the closer shots......the 308 can handle the mid range stuff and my 6XC can handle the really long stuff.

My situation is slightly different than the gentleman who started the other thread....I've got lots more options.....but want to put all my 308 components to work! I'm ready for new load workups

I did my first prairie dog hunt with a 17HMR, AR15 and Rem 700/308. The 308 was for the 600-1000+ dogs. Did a bunch of research on the heavier bullets and decided on the 185 berger vlds. They seemed to give the best velocity, BC combination. I added a Williams muzzle brake to the barrel which started out at 26" so finishing the barrel at 29". Very mild recoil and very accurate using RL15. I killed several dogs beyond 1000 with that rifle on my first shoot. Since that hunt, that barrel is now 22" and is used for woods deer hunting. Point is, don't underestimate the venerable .308. It's probably the most underestimated cartridge today since all the kids in the block showed up.

Back when I was young, I shot a few coyotes with 125g sierra's with a hot load. In my mind's eye, I can still see several flipping with all 4 feet in the air.

With light bullets 110-140 in the .308 IMR 8208 XBR can’t be beat for accuracy and speed. Good all weather load , light recoil Subsitute 130 Barnes TTSX for Deer load.
