Bucket List - Africa ✅

Yeah, but if you are in Zimbabwe and get your Buff, you (Me) might get offered a cull hunt for Elephant (tuskless cows or bull have no market value) and you spend your last day in camp with a wildcat 550 Gibbs. Five shots, three dead cows.

I just want one more trip...

Our PH wanted us to come back the next year and shoot a tusk less cull hunt, I just couldn’t swing it..

Definitely need one more trip!

That Impala was my first game taken on the hunt and the only one that actually dropped in it's tracks at about two hundred yards. The Gemsbok was the hardest, hunted them for two full days and killed him in the last minutes of light when we were just about done for the day. The Zebra surprised me as they were mostly in the mountainous areas whereas I expected them to be standing around out in the open plains. They were quite elusive and handled the high rocky areas with ease, we did a lot of hiking up in the rocky mountain tops, I still can't believe my PH got his rig up in those rocks to retrieve that Zebra.
Maybe that long plane ride wasn't that bad at all...

I've been lucky enough to go to South Africa and hunt 10 times. I have a fantastic PH with access to hundreds of thousands of acres of free ranging territory. I only hunt with handguns since 1978. I've taken the Dangerous 7 and a lot of other animals in the top 10-15 with 2 being #2. Dreams come true there.

A local Cancer benefit is coming up in September, with one of the auction items being a 5 day South African hunt. It'll be above my means, but it will be interesting to see what it brings.

If this is in the U.S., buyer beware. Five day hunts get you in the door for a longer hunt and spending more money than if you went on a pre-packaged deal.

I can see how a guy could spend a little more than he thought he would. I had a list of six animals that I was looking for when I went over. I wound up taking nine. :)
It depends on how you look at it, spend a little more now or come back again on another trip. Win - Win

Very nice hunt. My daughter went to Namibia for 10 days in July with her boyfriend and family. They had a great time, she doesn't hunt but ended up getting talked into shooting a huge Eland by the PH.

It's good to see the ladies get out too. A friend of mine took his wife along on our trip and she had a great time and took a trophy of her own. They had concerns because she has special dietary needs, but this Safari outfit was more than happy to accommodate her and went out of their way to meet her needs.

It's legit. A well known local SCI member is donating it. I believe it's though an outfitter he has used.

We hunted with Crusader Safaris when we went. I still keep in touch with the guide down there, top shelf kind of guy. I think they have increased the properties they hunt, somewhere around 700,000 acres plus of free range hunting. They aren’t the cheapest nor are they the most expensive, very professional in every regard. We had a blast.

As far as budgets go it’s easy to go over what you planned on spending, your literally seeing so many species and many quality animals daily that to keep your trigger finger away from that trigger gets harder and harder every day your there. Three of us went with a list of targeted species, we had just under 20 animals that we wanted between the three of us. We ended up taking more than twice that. Many of the cheaper animals, like wart hogs, were too much fun to just pass if they were big.

The other thing that happened to me was learning about new species while your there, like the tiny 10 list. That’s a group of really small animals that a lot of African hunters consider a neat slam of sorts, that would be a fun thing to do if I return, it would take multiple trips but that’s a good excuse to go back.

Its just a good time down there. My only recommendation is to make sure you vet your outfitter, if no high fences is importantly to you and big property is something you want then make sure you check it out. Once you zero in on the the right outfitter for you then you just have to do it, none of us are getting any younger, if your sitting on the fence Father Time might pass you by.

I'll put in a plug for Nick Bowker's venue. He's recently upgraded his accommodations and IIRC, between him and his other concessions, has over one million acres of low or no fence in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. If just wanting a less expensive full on experience without the costs of taxidermy, cull hunts are a good option.

I just got back from South Africa last week, a place that I’ve wanted to go all of my life. I had a great hunt and met some great people. All of the SA folks that I met were extremely friendly and welcoming. Hunted some beautiful country with a great family run outfit and saw an abundance of varied game. Maybe not for everyone but a lot of bang for your buck. I can see how Africa can get into your blood :D

Africa does get in your blood and there is nothing like it. Go as often as your health and wallet allows.
