BRX and Molly?

I am about to order 500 bullets for this season. I think I am going to go with Sierra 107s. But the thing I was kind of wanting to do is use Molly coating because I dont want to have to clean as much. Do you think I am doing myself a disservice by doing so? Is anyone else using molly with the 6brx?

Josh,
You will probably will find more negative posts on this then positive ones but I have used Molly coated 107 SMK's in my 6brx and have been very happy with the results, we have shot two relays then shot the next day without cleaning, I don't like doing that but the results were satisfactory, normally we clean at the end of the day and use butches and kroil and it doesn't take much and there ready for the next day, these were my experiences anyway.

Josh,

I have used moly in all my guns for years and would never go back. Like you I hate to clean every time I shoot. I used to shoot a little club benchrest and used to watch the guys clean after every 10 or so rounds. No fun! Then I tried using moly. Many times I shot the entire match without cleaning. About 50 rds. or so. Many times my last group of the day would be in the .150 -.200 range. Hope this helps. Paul. 8)

Josh, I've shot moly coated bullets since 1996, probably in the range of 100,000 of them by now; mostly .30 caliber and 6mm. The only effects you'll see are positive, reduced fouling being the most important one (the only one that matters, actually).

I clean after each day's shooting, but you could go two days without seeing a material reduction in accuracy. Just don't buy into the "no cleaning ever needed" theory, that just isn't so.

Here's a link to an article on moly-coating procedure http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/2009/09/moly-coating-salazar.html and if you go to the index page on my site, there is a moly-coating section with more articles that might be useful.

Thanks for the info. Is there a big difference in HBN and molly? I do not have a tumbler so I cant do it myself. Who would do HBN?

Josh,
I agree with German 100% I am very surprised of the positive comments so far, I have not used the HBN so I can't comment, I would like to give it a try, I shoot molly in all my rifles including my hunting rifles and have seen nothing but positive results with zero negative results. Don't be scared to do your own molly, if you shoot a lot you can't afford to buy molly coated bullets and it is so easy to do, buy some molly from Sinclair or who ever you do business with and a inexpensive vibratory that will be dedicated to molly coating, some ceramic beads and go to Germans site and follow simple instructions, you will not be sorry.

ar15topgun is right.

I used moly in my 243 WIN bench rest gun. then, I changed to hBN and never looked back!

I coat myself in a vibrator cleaner and the process is way cleaner, Moly was a pain to clean out of the gun, but hBN allows longer intervals between cleaning, up to 200 rounds. And hBN makes cleaning a breeze. I pre-charge the bore after cleaning with a mop and hBN in alcohol. Takes 2-4 round to stabilize shots.

Do you know anyone that does the HBN this besides Tubb? I really didnt want to spend $55 for 1000. I am only getting a pack of 500.

Josh you must have a vibrator if you reload in order to clean your brass. If so you can coat your own bullets with HBN or molly which ever is your choice. It's easier to coat bullets than reload ammo so think about it. A jar or two with some clean bb's, hbn or molly, add bullets and put jars in vibrator. Run for 3-4hrs. and remove coated bullets. With hbn you are finished and ready to load. With molly next step is application of wax and then you can load. It's not that hard just requires a little time.

I couldn't agree more with this post, I don't even wax mine anymore, not suggesting other do not I have just gave up on it and I have a dedicated vibrator for molly but if it isn't in the budget then use a jar like 15topgun suggested and your vibrator will stay clean, if you don't own a vibrator there really inexpensive anymore.

My Savage 6BRX has done very well the last 3 seasons with moly and 107SMK`s

That`s as many as 16 F-Class matches a year.

I bore foam clean when the season is done and borrow a Hawkeye borescope to inspect when done. No issues to date.

Regards,

Scott

Doesn't get much more more cost effective than this one:

Scott,
How many do you figure you have down the tube? using the bore scope how much erosion has occurred so far?

Here is a very good bit on hBN coating;

Wayne,

The Shilen barrel was "gifted" to me by one of our regular attendees at my small club F-Class matches. When I asked for a conservative estimate of how many rounds were down the tube, he simply shrugged his shoulders and replied " a bunch". He spent time at Willlamsport and a club in Virgina in 1K competitions.

As I shoot moly exclusively, I bore foamed the barrel until the blue disappeared and borrowed a borescope and was surprised to see what could be described a barrel with at least a thousand rounds thru it. My norm is to start a "jam" with moly coated bullets, I was pleasantly surprised to get MOA results at our "point blank" club distance of 200yds. We have since moved out to 240yds and expect to chop and trim the woods to get 250yds this season.

Granted, my example could be termed ho-hum, as we no longer have a 1K venue within a reasonable driving distance, our group still enjoys the format at our small rural club.

I had a 6BR built last year using the above load method and I am well pleased with the results. When I chose to campain the 6BR, the 6BRX was loaned to a new shooter. I nearly always have an extra gun and ammo for a new shooter, especially for a Junior shooter and have been rewarded by the enormous grin when the results are posted.

This year, I am having a 30BR put together for the same purpose, and it too will be loaned out when appropriate.

Regards,

Scott

Scott,
That's pretty cool what your doing for your club :) and that is good to know about how many rounds you probably have and it is still shooting.
Wayne.

I checked out tubbs website and I think I'm going to give hnb a try. I'll have to call them, he said in the video that he recommends that I leave it in the tumbeler for an hour. Is that all? Also in the video he did not use any bbs to coat the bullets.
