Bruno Shooters vs Kelbly rifles

Consider purchasing a well made used gun. If you decide you don't like the short range game, you aren't out as much money. Don't get too caught-up on brand names, nor "big name" gunsmiths. Though you did not include the Marsh action in your list, don't overlook it! It is "state of the art", designed specifically for the short range game. Much of "use this one over that one" is a monkey see, monkey do thing.
Sorry, but I just don't buy into the Benchresters are all lemmings thing. Competitive Benchrest has evolved into hyper specialized equipment. Looking at the TOP smiths listed in winning match reports of the big tournaments, you will find virtually all of them are also top competitors- or were competitors in the past who have garnered many HOF points. In a game where a few ten thousandths of an inch separated first place to second in a 2 gun agg at the World Series of SR BR -the FISS Supershoot, you don't want to leave anything on the table if you want to be serious about winning.
The last thing you want when getting into this game is a gun that you cannot trust (ie. inconsistent, throws shots unexplicably)......this will quickly lead to frustration and at the bottom of the match results list. IMHO, the best advice was to buy a used gun with a "proven record" ....better than that would be a gun with the same scope that established that record. The dirty little secret is that actions from the same custom manufacturer are NOT born alike -most require some form of tweaking....and even with that -some will never shoot, some will , and a very few will just be just be awesome. Bat Machine and Kelbly Stolle actions give you the highest percentage of getting one in the awesome category. Add in a smith with HOF points....learn to read the wind well, practice flawless form, and you are golden.

Great responses! Thank all of you for your collective wisdom and experience.

Back to the drawing board for me. This is going to require a great deal more thought and research.

Thanks again for all the great advice.

If you are in Columbus GA
You are only 2.5 hr away from either of the only two places in Georgia holding registered group benchrest matches
Dublin Ga home of the annual shamrock shoot each spring brings BR shooters from all over the country over 200 this past spring
Riverbend gun club Dawsonville GA home of the southeast regional championship each fall of the year as well as spring match
Riverbend also has monthly club matches. The men that belong to that club and shoot BR are a great bunch of guys
I'm up in western NC I travel to these matches. The 2016 southeast championship was just 3 weeks or so ago
Feel free to send me a pm I can give you the contact info for Club match director at Riverbend

There was a shooter getting out of BR due to health reasons ar Riverbend match selling. a Bat B dual port action in a Scoville stock that had won a few matches.
There is top of the line equipment for sale at some of these matches

I bought a right bolt dual port Panda and a Scoville stock from this forum a couple months ago. I chambered a new barrel for it and dang near won the 3 gun at the southeast regional a couple weeks ago.
Just be patient and watch the classifieds here and at BRcentral
