Browning BLR in 243

I was very happy to recently jump on an Arm List sale for a near perfect condition Browning BLR in 243 Win.

Some 20 years ago, one of the first rifles I learned reloading on was a old bolt action 243. For some dumb reason I sold that old rifle... probably because I needed the $ for some other rifle I wanted to try. ;)

Now, a few years older... a bit wiser... and blessed so that I don't have to trade to get a new (to me) gun... I was able to jump on this 1989 version for $700.

Digging up my old loading data and looking forward to make a couple of custom loads for this addition to the family!

I had one in .358Win. Played with it for a while and sent it along to a new owner. I know many shooters love lever actions, but I discovered that I'm not one of them.

Anyway, hopefully it serves you well. I had no issues with the function of mine. Just wasn't a good fit for me personally.

Years ago I was helping an older (younger than I am now) fellow with a BLR in .308 at the range. He was not getting the accuracy that he would have liked, shooting off a front rest and rear bag, from a concrete shooting bench. He had the front bag out where you would expect, not far back from the front of the forend. After shooting a test group I suggested that we move the front rest back so that the bag was on the back of the forend. That made a major difference, cut the group in half. Two piece stocks can take a different approach.

Our 243 truck gun load

Sierra 85's part no 1530
36.5 - 38 grain charge
of Varget or IMR 4064
Tends to shoot well, 1/10 twist barrels.

Had a 243 blr in the late 80s early 90s. Neat little rifle with excellent wood. Shot adequate.
Bought a BAR in 243 around 2000, really liked the form of that gun but it was just not my cup of tea even though I really did like the feel and form. Shot okay.

I knew a man that used one of them for most of his lifetime. A blr 243. All he ever shot was imr4350 and 85gr sierra hpbt. Never saw a year he didnt have an 8 pointer hanging in the tree. Find a good load and send it.

A friend had one but I think it was 308. Seemed too short for me. He could wreck a steel ball with a rubber hammer, but he never tore up the BLR.
