Breaking-in a new Savage 6mmBR

I've never broke in a barrel. And I am confused about breaking in a new barrel. What exactly needs to be done, and with what? Thanks, for the information.

You think your confused now? Just wait till you get 2597 different replies to your question :o ;D

Hotly debated topic. Some swear by it, some swear at it.

FWIW Heres Savages recommendation from thier site. This is your basic breakin procedure.
Or you may ultimately decide to just forget about it and go shoot.
Whatever you decide make sure to clean that bore before you run a bullet down it. They come filthy from the factory. Never know whats hiding in there.
When its clean pay attention to snug dry patches as you run them down the bore.
They might feel "gritty" like the bore is made of very fine sandpaper.
They might run down smooth like a babys butt.
This should help you decide.
A very light coating of oil or graphite in the bore usually helps. Never a good idea to run a bullet down a dry super clean bore, especially a new factory tube.

I'm not going to try to get into this topic to much. I have seen this debate before lol.
Best thing to do is if you have other rifles and did not break the barrel in. Then try a barrel breakin process and try it. Since it is a savage go with what they recommend. Then look at everything about the barrel after you have broke it in. How well does it clean up, does it shoot better, how fast does it foul after being cleaned. Think about the differences it made if it did or didn't compare that to other guns you have and didn't break in the barrel. Take the pros, and cons and decide if it is worth doing for you.

Shot410 - I have no meaningful advice regarding which break in routine works best or even matters.

However the one listed on the Savage Website seems to leave out the important first step - which is clean the barrel before you fire the first shot through it - Just bought a new F-Class Savage 6mmBR and the barrel was not clean as it came from the Factory - as far as what was in it I don't know but the patches were definitely black.

Good luck with your new toy.

The only thing I would add to the myth of barrel break in is that if people would actually THINK about what they are trying to do, all this nonsense would go away.

You can't remove rough spots by wetting the bore with solvent and etc...actually, since you're trying to smooth metal, cleaning would be counterproductive since it removes anything in the barrel which might wear away those rough spots if it could. Buy a good barrel to start with.............................those tool marks will be with you forever in that factory barrel no matter what you do. On the other hand, I've heard it said and found it to be true that a good barrel is broken in by the time you've finished forming your brass in it.

Oh, one more thing to set some people to chewing the mouse pad---David Tubb's final finish actually does work, sorta.

From my experience with new Savage factory tubes, they don't settle down good till about 150-200 shots. When I say settle down, I mean shoot consistent rather than a good group, and then a shitty group. Clean up fairly easy, even after 40 rounds or more been shot down the barrel. Thats when you know you got a barrel broke in. The shoot once, clean, shoot once, clean, I don't know? From what I've read thats so you can see when the copper fouling reduces when the throat gets smoothed out from x number of shots. In my honest opinion, there is no good way or bad way to break in a barrel. Like what has been said though, give it a thorough cleaning before shooting.
