brass segregation while cleaning

looking to see if anyone has any experience with keeping different types of brass separated while tumbling. some kind of net bag maybe. wanting to tumble different calibers at one time. any info is greatly appreciated. bryant

That would depend on how you're tumbling/cleaning. I typically run from 100 to 125 pieces at a time in the Thumler's Tumbler with SS pins. I can't imagine why you would have less than a full load of specific cases that you would need to tumble immediately, rather than wait until you had enough of one type to do a full (single) run. I typically like to have at least 300-500 pieces for a given rifle and will accumulate (fire) enough to do a cleaning run. However, if you do, is it really that much effort to do additional runs for the difference cases? I rather suspect putting cases into a mesh bag or other type of "container" will not allow them to receive the full benefit of the tumbling process.

I have never segregated cases............when ever I have enough cases to run, I run it. Its usually a mixed bunch of 204's, 223's, 22-250's, basically what ever I have on hand to fill'er up. I don't think a mesh bag would be of any value in the process though.

I don't see any benefit to segregate brass other than pistol brass that has a tendency to stick together such as 9mm and 40mm. Rifle brass has no issues to warrant sepereting them with the opinion that using mesh bags might only hinder the cleaning process in using SS pins.

If you go to all the trouble to segregate cases by weight, then you want to keep them segregated by weight. I wonder if something like the red small plastic squared bags that oranges come in my work. I thought about this myself many times.

I keep brass in there fired cycle batches so keeping them separate is important for me..

You're on to something here.

I would like the ability to keep groups of brass seperated by type, times fired, etc., during wet tumbling.

My system:

Each rifle has it's own group of dedicated cases, 100 each divided into 20 round groups each with its own 20 round cartridge box (MTM). i.e. 5 boxes of 20 rounds each for each rifle. This allows me to clean 20 to 60 cases while having 20 to 60 loaded or waiting to be loaded.

On a label on each 20 round box (group) I record the number of times fired and trimmed.

I tumble (clean) cases from groups with the same number of times fired and trimmed for that specific rifle.

I might mix calibers, such a 243's, 223's and 308's to increase the efficiency of the tumbler operation but all the cases are traceable back to a specific rifle / caliber. The result is that I never mix cases from different rifles of the same caliber or cases from the same rifle with different times fired or times trimmed.

I got a feeling any fabric/ plastic/ mesh bags would get shredded in a ss pin wet tumbler - making a mess, and mixing the brass.
