Rnage Cleaning Box

Anyone have experience with a good quality range cleaning box?? Looking for something that will stand the test of time yet won't break the bank!! Know MTM makes a couple versions but have not seen either in person? Would be cleaning both long guns and AR types. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you looking for a box to clean on or to take your items along to range? If just a box for items a toolbox is fine. If to clean on...you can make a carpenters box modified to be a cradle and box to carry ALL the stuff needed. I'll try and post a picture of what I mean.

You might want to take a look at Cabela's website and look in the "Fishing Tackle Box" section, if it's a carrier you are looking for. There are several sizes and styles that are made of solid plastic and have plastic drawers of different sizes that allow you to carry all sorts of things needed for cleaning your rifle, no matter the style. I've been using one of those light weight boxes for a few years now and it makes it easy to have everything you need at the range to clean your rifles (or handguns) and things are arranged so you don't have to dig through a ditty bag looking for what you want to use.

Another source might be Costco where occasionally they have multi-drawer wooden tool boxes that aren't exactly cheap, but solid as a rock with a carrying handle. I choose the Cabela's route because they are easily half (or less) the carrying weight of the Costco tool box.

I've seen the MTM Range Cleaning Box and it appears to be well thought out.....the one concern that I have with it is the cradle won't allow you to keep muzzle down while cleaning, which has always been a rule in rifle cleaning, the Tactical model apparently also accomodates AR-15's. Hoppe's makes a nice stand-alone cradle that dissassembles for ~ $20 (Precision Reloading), but when using a 3" wide BR fore-end it also does not permit muzzle down.
As rmist alluded to- a homemade wood box works great and can be custom built to your needs.....mine has a cradle for 3" BR stocks and one for 2-1/4" Hunter Class BR or normal hunting style stocks.

Here is a carpenters box for all the stuff. It has a folding handle that also has notches for your cleaning roods. This one was made for the 3" forearm. You can add a adaptor for the AR's or whatever you can come up with. It can be as nice as you want it to be. Mine has a quick detach pin for the handle to move out of the way when cleaning.

Tipton makes one that has every item needed to clean with in a box that holds the other stuff like solvents and boreguides. I think they call it ultimate range box or something

I just looked and i guess all they sell is the box now. It does have the tray that holds all the jags and brushes and the cradles that stow in the box

I use a Plano tackle box. It has enough drawers for patches, bore guides, brushes, and cleaning chemicals. I also have a field repair kit with a bolt disassembly tool, an inch pound wrench, a screw driver set w/removable tips, a bore sighter, and a pin punch set. My cleaning rods are housed in a Sinclair cleaning cradle with rod holders. By the way this is pic of the new one that I replaced the old box with (same model almost 20 years later)! I'd say 20 years is great longevity for a light weight box.

I have one of the MTM Tactical boxes and it does a good job. It come with an magazine adapter that allows you to hold your AR for work or cleaning. See link below

I've got a rather large soft back pack that is the Gawd Aufullest mess you've ever seen. Best thing I can say about it, is that it's got EVERYTHING in it; probably even a tuna sandwich. It is pretty tough to find what I'm looking for when I need it though, and I don't recommend this particular system. I'm tempted to throw this thing off a bridge and start over; maybe with a shoe box this time. :D jd

I have a MTM range box. It's just the right size to hold my cleaning and maintainence gear. Only complaint is after a year of heavy use (bi-weekly range trips) the plastic hinges that hold the top and bottom together are starting to wear. So far I haven't dumped the contents of the box but it's bound to happen at some point. It does have a place for a lock or twist ties to secure the two halfs.

RMist if you made that box I can tell this isn't your first rodeo. Nice job!!!

Thanks Ebb
....It's made of red oak with a mahogany handle. I think it turned out fairly well.
Thanks again

Do you happen to have plans for that box? That's very, very nice.

Sent you a PM... Thanks for the praise. Unfortunately I don't. Something similar but different...LOL

I made an aluminum box with a cleaning cradle that nests under the box. I cut all the metal and had a friend weld it up it is at times like these I wish I knew how to post a picture.
