Brass Prep Steps

Joe C

Student of the 1911.
Hello,

Could some of you please tell me the order of your brass prep? I am working on getting my system down and was curious as to how others do it.

Clean,inspect for cracks,wipe down,,clean pockets if needed, trim if needed,deburr if needed,size carefully,prime,load!

I anneal after every 3rd loading once the cases are clean and decapped.

I have a few questions about that 6mmbr process.

The process says.
Method: Use a Redding Body Die or Full-Length Sizing Die to force the shoulder and body into a standard configuration. Redding’s Body Die for the 6.5×284 is shown with sized Lapua cases.

Question: Since a Body Die is permissible, I am presuming that the Full-Length die should NOT have the expander ball portion used in this step?

I would not remove the expander ball unless you are using an s-type full length die.I am not so sure what 6.5x284 has to do with your question. You use a body die to bump the shoulder with the use of a neck die.If you have a tight neck chamber you will have to use a s-type(bushing die) to neck size ,if it is a no turn you can neck size using a full length die backed off a turn from the shell plate, but I would use a bushing die or cutom die to meet what ever your chaber needs.

The 6.5 x 284 reference was what was written in the link previously mentioned. http://www.accurateshooter.com/featured/complete-precision-case-prep/. I just copied and pasted a part of the text in that link, which happened to be talking about 6.5 x 284, and for which I had a question.

The process I use the following

Clean fired brass
Annneal brass
Clean the necks after annealling
Size the neck
Size the body
Expand the neck
Clean the cases of the lube
Trim to lenght
Debur and chamfer
Clean the primer pockets

I do this process everytime.

1. Clean brass
2. inspect brass
3. clean primer pockets
4. size brass
5. trim if necessary
6. chamfer and debur brass
7. polish inside the neck
8. ready for primer, powder, and bullet

I only shoot Winchester brass, the matches I shoot in there is a lot of lost brass.

New brass
FL size with a non bushing die, expander removed
Expand the neck with a expanding mandrel
Trim to a uniform length
Neck turn to .0135 and cut about 1/32 into the shoulder
Uniform the pocket
Deburr the flashole from the inside
Load

Fired brass
Clean the outside
Clean the pocket
Brush the neck
Inspect
Anneal every 3 firings
FL size with a .001 bump
Trim/chamfer
Load
