Brake or Port?

.03 over is what we have used as a standard. Badger makes a nice side port brake. There is the FTE and Thruster. We also make a side port brake that is similar.

Preacher: .328" before opening up, now approx. .338", as close as I can measure. We checked all the interior surfaces with my Hawkeye for signs of bullet/brake contact, there was none, and that's when the 'smith said he would open up an additional .010", and warned me there may be more felt recoil. If there is I cannot feel it. Recoil is a gentle "push" straight back & to the rear without the torqueing/twisting I had before, probably the reason for the smaller groups. Although shakey at first, it turned out well.

The harrels break is nice but like stated above it is not plesent if shot from the ground. I have an ops inc and I am happy with it. I am getting very good accuracy from my rifle and when shooting from the ground it will kick up some stuff but it is not too bad.

So the "GILL" type brake without the ports directed in the dirt will stop the prone hazards, yes? Looking at the simple design, I guess its obvious. Sometimes its the simple things that get overlooked.

I am dwelling on the "brake bore" diameter. This has been a problem with some of the brakes out there. After all the trial and error, is there a "clearance" that is recommended?

EX; .010 over the bore diameter?

Having this site with this abundance of knowledge on these late nights is more than remarkable.

.010 over bore diameter will try to get you in trouble if it's not dead nuts on the barrel.
.020 is what is usually recommended but sometimes a bit larger can be better....

Thanks Preacher.
So the smith that is doing the work needs to be "ON" the bore centerline or a close tolerance brake just might rub the bullet a bit. .020 will allow for a sloppy set-up.
Is rubbing the bullet the issue, or can muzzle gasses cause an upset if there isnt enough clearance through the brake?

Some of these brake designs might not be so bad after all, it could be a bad installation that is the cause for the accuracy problems.
