Brake cleaner after shooting

You are probably right, and I always use anything like that in a well ventilated area, even sometimes stepping outside. Also keeping any overspray off my hands.

Personally, I stay as far away as possible from brake cleaner and other such products. That stuff is very hard on the central nervous system.

Since the topic has turned to health aspects of BraKleen, I'll just add this for posterity:

DO NOT use chlorinated brake cleaner to degrease parts for welding.

When heated, it creates phosgene gas, which can be deadly.

Brake cleaner for cleaning stubborn hard to reach crevices and some light air pressure is perfect for cleaning components such as trigger groups and semi auto bcg's .

Just thinking out loud here. Why wouldn't the spray carburator cleaner be a better choice for spraying down a barrel? Its intended purpose is to break carbon loose in the fuel delivery system of an auto.
Brake cleaner is designed to clean road crud off the brake parts.
Both products have a very rapid evaporation.

Carb cleaner is very strong stuff ! I would be concerned about the possibility of carb cleaner overspray discoloring wood, polymer or blued surfaces. Brake cleaner is a better compramise of "tough, but not too tough" as far as chemical strength.

What in it is bad?

Thanks

Thanks but I'm looking to get the specific chemical compound it it that "causes central nervous system damage".

Hi Guys,
I have started using brake cleaner to flush the bore after I'm finished shooting and while the bore is still warm. I generally do a thorough cleaning of the rifle when I get home.
I have been using brake cleaner to clean the brushes at the end of a cleaning session and it always does a good job of blowing carbon and dirt off.

Does anybody else use this? What is your experience? Do you have preferred after shooting method? Thanks for sharing.

Joe

Joe, this is my preference;

Before leaving the range for the ride home: 2-3 suirts from the can on the left after tube is inserted in the chamber to the shoulder.

For cleaning brushes I generally don't like to spray them with anything. However the can in the middle is my preference for blowing stuff clean when away from home.

Brake cleaner has its uses, especially when it comes to brakes, but for guns and associated equipment I don't see any advantage but some obvious disadvantages to using it. Note the skull and cross bones on the can.

tetrachloroethylene

I want to thank everyone that contributed to this thread. I learned a few things that I wasn't expecting. Like it's much cheaper to buy brake cleaner then hornet/wasp killer spray. And boy, do we get those in Houston. Also, I better keep the garage door open when I use it there, or it could accidentally improve my motor and thinking skills.

Thanks everyone.

Joe

tetrachloroethylene

I thought we were talking non-chlorinated? That's in Chlorinated Brake cleaners. I only use non-chlorinated because tetrachloroethylene is a carcinogen. Non-chlorinated brake cleaners are usually just acetone.

Thanks
