Brain teaser for the day...

Mr Moran is making some excellent points that need to be understood if you want to gain in competition. If you are wrestling with the rifle it is enough to knock you out of the top slots in a match against people that have it together.
It's been an issue for me in the past and is why I am hard over about having apt he action timed so there is minimal opening force, that the chamber to die match is as close to perfect as can practically be so that closing and opening forces are minimized, and my front and rear bag setup is double checked.

Something that was said on here recently that i plan to implement this year is dry fir practice at home going through my bench technique, videoing it and using it to improve.

1st I agree with the ~100" low, ~250" right crowd.

Maybe seeing it in a picture will help folks.

Here is the chart (in inches) of the effect of cant on a typical round.
Mine drops 373" at 1000, so that is the reference.
Each dot moving away from the center is 5 degrees cant.

elevation point of impact is (COS(RADIANS(cant)) * drop) - drop
windage point of impact is (SIN(RADIANS(cant)) * drop) - windage (where we agreed windage was 0)

I gotta admit...this was 20 min of my life that I will never get back!!

Every minute is one you will never get back.

I've spent a lot of time thinking and reading about issues like this because, as a computer programmer, I think I can offer something to the community in the form of an Android app, to do stuff like this. I searched all over the app store and there is not a good FREE app to use for shooting - for keeping records or doing ballistics.

If anyone is aware of such an app, please let me know. Otherwise I'm gonna make one :)

Oh BTW - the problem with the existing apps is they would basically double or triple your shooting time. I want something that works with a photograph of the target. Placing your shots on a virtual target is lame - there is no way that can be accurate.

A poorly drawn 3D visual of the math in my graph.

Small circle is bore, black line out of it is bore line, blue dots out of it is a bad rendition of bullet path.
Large circle is scope, black line out of it is sight line.
Red line down is the drop due gravity (straight down) that is on the bullet in all 3 cases.
Green arrow is pointing at the point of impact.

The 1st case (0 degrees) you recognize as your intended shot on every windless day.
The last case (90 degrees) is also easy to imagine. (elevation is windage to the right, 0 elevation causes bullet to miss low by the drop)

The middle case (45 degrees) is a bit tough to draw, but you can see how it is 'part way' between the 0 and 90 degree case. I threw in the actual numbers so you can see it is a fixed value multiplied by whatever drop you are experiencing at that distance.

It was a brain teaser , that to me means look at the wording , and no where did he mention sights ,or scope ,only rifle . Thats why I answered no change , but if sights or scope mounted where they usually are , above the barrel ,then it would be low and right , how much right would depend on how high the scope or sights were mounted.

The issue is the meaning of "right" rotation. If the OP had said clockwise, there would have been no argument. If you move the scope to the right, that's clockwise. If you move the barrel to the right, that's completely the other way!

The originator of the thread did clarify that a scope was used in post #13 of this thread..."No scope corrections. The cross hairs are held on the X as before."

I see that now but that was not in the original post , thats like telling the punch line 10 min after the joke . I just read the orig post and not every elses opinion . I did not waste 20 min of my life . Well I guess I have now . Is he ever gonna revell his answer ?

Fair enough. I'm assuming he didn't know either and was seeking an answer.

No! I guessed low left.

But now I'm with the low, wayyy right crowd.

Some really good explanation were posted here. Thanks guys.

I experimented with this... held my rifle totally sideways and couldn't really see a difference in the point of impact, but only at 100-200 yards with a 223. It should have at least been low, but I think you need more distance to see the effect.

Well i guess this the closest thing to actually doing a test. It proves what most people have already said too.

Jbm trajectory calculator shows 16" lower and 27' right with 0 mph wind and a 45 degree cant to the right.
