Br 4 vs 205m

Link

Silver $$ Contributor
6br - 30gr Varget - 105 VLDs 10 shots, same temp, different day, Garmin
Br4 = 2780 fps
205M = 2818 fps
Just saying what I saw.
I can't compare groups because they were shot at different distances.

I tested both several years ago when I started with the 30BR and saw about 10-15 fps higher velocity with the BR-4s. Same charge of H-4198. Probably too small a sample size to be unequivocal. Bottomline... use whatever is on your shelf and don't sweat the small stuff.

I usually finish load development with the primer I started with. If there’s a problem, it shows itself quickly and I’ll change.

I have a pile of CCI 450s and Fed 205M. It seems I remember the BR4 is just a CCI 450 made by more experienced hands.

The Guru’s suggest the receivers ignition and how the primer is struck to dictate a preference in primer's, two exact same rifles may each prefer a different primer.
Only testing will solve the puzzle, and yes there were some tests posted ( I deleted my thread on primers) but iirc Donavan had one and maybe Mulligan as well.
The synopsis in my thread was that at short range most primers shot about the same yet at longer range the choice was clear.

CCI 450 = Magnum
I use them exclusively in my 6BR.. Just liked the performance better than the BR4”s and they are quite a bit cheaper… At least where I buy them.

So is the BR4. It’s has the same cup, anyway.

CCI 400s have a thinner cup than both. Truly, I don’t think any of us will ever know the exact differences, but I do know I’ll never buy another BR4 when Federals are half the price and shoot better for me.

CCI primers both large and small I find seem to burn cleaner with less tenacious residue left in the primer pocket. Makes cleaning the brass {I do @ time} easier and of course I have been happy with their performance.

I just recently did a test on a new barrel with BR4's and 205m AR's. It was pretty evident what primer it wanted even at 100 yards. You should test across different powder charges with each primer your testing . Sometimes they will tune up at different spots.

Messing with my Tikka T3 with a factory take off 8 twist barrel I just installed. My good friend Josh gave it to me. Using 26.0 gr of Varget and shooting the 62 Eld-Vt. Tested the Rem 7.5, CCI-450, and the CCI-BR4. Hands down the CCI-450 shot the smallest groups. Sometimes it is shocking how much a primer switch can effect a good load. Coyotes beware!
