Box Stands for Deer Hunting

Mine got blown over last night in a pretty violent T storm. Got it back up with help of the farmer that mows hay off my field. Some damage. I needed another project this summer:( It was anchored with rebar about 2 feet, angled into the ground. 20 + inches of rain over the last month defeated that for sure.

T posts make good anchors. With a driver you can go as deep as you want.

In Texas you could always just sit in it on the ground, shake a coffee can full of corn with your weak hand, and hold the ballpein hammer behind your back so they can't see it in your strong hand, and hunt very economically. :)

Oh man, not looking good bud. My biggest worry in Missouri is another tree falling on the stand, which happens a lot.
yeah, it's back up, not steady yet. Gonna need some hydraulics to set it back. First get the legs steady, even temporarily. Then set, repair a bit of box damage. Since we have had all this rain, the ground is soft. I think digging a two foot deep hole and setting a sakrete infuse cinder block with a chain attached will be the next anchor. It sucks.

I wonder if wall jacks would work for lifting it up one side at a time. Know any carpenters?

Started this morning with a hi-lift just to get the pecantered legs pulled out. No go. Started to go over.
I could rig something, but I'll wait on the heavy equipment. As long as I don't have any heavy wind till this weekend I should be OK.

Several years ago a mean tornado ran through a farm I was hunting, I had built 3 stands 8x8 from sawed oak and hung my welded stand on the corn. That damn thing hit 3 of them including my steel latch on. #1 wood survived even with trees down everywhere. #2 (mine) took the whole damn tree out. #3 wood got twisted so hard the tree split and the steps were in the split.

The sawed oak stands proved to be pretty tough and all were built in huge trees.

Material list:
20 - 8’ 2x6
10 - 8’ 2x4
2 sheets fir plywood ripped 2’x8’ for sides
5# 40p ringshank
10# 20p ringshank
3 - 9’ sheets of tin
1# tin nails or screws
1# 16p sinkers for getting lumber in place with ease
Better be part squirrel or don’t try this with heavy lumber...

Only way to fly on an enclosed stand. Cooler when hot outside, warmer (easier to heat) when cold outside.

I’m only sealing the wood so I have more room for shelves between the studs. I would like to see how to insulate without mice taking over the stand.

Hi Mike. I have an insulated stand for my wife. No mice inside for 3 years, then I found the door partially open 3 weeks ago. Had a mouse and youngins to dispense with. I also have an insulated cabin that went along for years with no mice. The front was barn boards, all the rest metal. Barn boards finally rotted out from snow on the bottom. Mice took over. My wife and I tore the whole front off last spring. We replaced the barn boards with steel. Put in new insulation and drywall. No mice once again for the past year.

Think the key to keeping mice out is to keep them from climbing up the posts. I used tin and made a funnel around each post to keep them from getting to the shack. Even wrapped it around the 2x6 verticals on my ladder going up. Guess I'll see if that keeps them out. Plus it's air tight. Kinda like my house. No place for the mice to get in. Steel roof so kinda hard to get in thru that as well. Insulation is covered by 1/4" OSB inside. Even if they did get in, they couldn't eat up the insulation.

What insulation are you using?

I have to say this is a look I like to see in a stand. Outstanding work!
Thank you. It'll get the job done. Everyone I know says mice WILL get in. I'm hoping I can go back in a few years and say, Nope, they didn't on mine. I know the odds but still keeping my fingers crossed.

I’ve been battling those little stinkers in one of my stands. Poison and caulking gun trying to evict those determined little suckers. Last year I had to pump water on my clover and found out just how big a army I was fighting. They took over the mole runs in the field and turned them into barracks! Lol
