Boretech Eliminator vs Pro Shot vs CLR

I shot 100 rounds of Lapua 6br 90 grain ammo through my Rock Creek barrel.

Then I cleaned as normal with Bore Tech Eliminator.



Followed up with Pro Shot that did nothing better than Bore tech.



Followed by CLR. Which did remove something that was light brown. I am assuming the stubborn carbon, but I do not have a scope.


My conclusion is Bore Tech is still my fave and it, combined with a JB scrub probably cannot be improved much. CLR does seem to soften carbon as advertised.

Boretech Eliminator should still be your favorite as it is IMO the best all around cleaner available.....but it is not the best for stubborn carbon deposits. Brushing, Iosso or JB and/or CLR will still be needed.

I use Bore Tech, Hoppe's #9 and CLP in the following sequence:

1) Bore Tech Eliminator until minor blue (copper) showing
2) Dry patches until clean
3) Hoppe's # 9 on Bronze brush (periodically)
4) Dry patches
5) CLP on soaked patches until clear to remove carbon
6) Dry patches till clean and to remove excess lubricant

I only use the Hoppe's #9, if the barrel is really fouled.
The Bore Tech really does a job on the copper but not too well on carbon.
The CLP is a great all around cleaner and lubricant. It will remove the carbon and leave a protective coating. In fact, on my hand guns, I only use CLP.

Agree 100% with @22DASHER ..... while Eliminator works great on copper and black fouling, it does very little on carbon layer. And is why Boretech also has and recommends Carbon Remover.

This is another classic example of what happens and goes unseen without a bore-scope.

I have been using Boretech until clean and then two patches of scrub with JB every other clean for years now and my barrels are very, very clean and shoot very well. I hate brushes. I do like these Butch's patches though!!!

I will try the CLR since I bought it.... but I don't really think there is anything wrong with JB scrub every other cleaning despite the Internet rumors to the contrary which is somewhere in the neighborhood of Flat Earth or the Mandela Effect...

You need a PROOF POSITIVE JAG or you will get false readings. C-4 2 patches, 12 passes with C-4 on a nylon brush, 1 patch with C-4,, 2 patches with eliminator, 12 passes with a nylon brush with eliminator, 1 patch with eliminator, 1 dry patch. If i see that blue on the patch i will make a couple of passes with Eliminator Copper Cleaner and proceed accordingly. Try Montana bore polish, it's not as aggressive as JB or IOSSO but gets the job done, 2 grains will do it.

Ok bro, well I took the time to get the products, and I tested them to the best of my ability, and I posted what I saw. Take it for what it is worth. I am not going to get in a big pissing contest over it. If you don't like the test do YOUR OWN and post it!!!

Pro Shot did nothing BTW and it STINKS. I say Boretech is the clear winner. As I figured.

And I said I use JB and I have ZERO problem with JB and never have had a problem with it. And I have scoped my barrels cleaned with Boretech and JB and they are spotless (and I use moly too and there is no moly in my barrels either despite all the rumors to the contrary).

The ingredients in CLR produce the brownish color when used on stainless steel. Much like using Flitz. Although Flitz is non abrasive and white in color, the patches come out grey/black, even when used on a new/unfired barrel.

So, you are using C-4 for carbon and then Eliminator for copper?

Oh I seeee.... well there you go.

I am going to use the CLR to clean carbon on my 357 stainless and see how it does. That will be a visible test.

You stated that your barrel was clean... that IS pure speculation without a bore scope. Just because your patches come out somewhat clean does not mean the barrel is clean. Been there, done that, and believed that one too many times.

I basically do the same process you do except I use bronze brushes.PS I don't have a borescope either I let the targets tell me of I cleaned it good enough I always follow up cleaning with this particular rust preservation I leave it in till I get ready to shoot again run one try patch an foul the barrel.
