Bore tech users

This is just a heads up to everyone. This rifle was cleaned with c4 carbon eliminator approximately a month ago. I got my bore scope out to check my new 30br barrel I just cleaned last week after fireforming some brass and noticed a little what looks to be rust at the throat so I run a brush through through it, and some patches to get rid of it as it was very light. I thought I better get this rifle and check it. I was shocked to see how much rust was in the throat. you can’t see it in the picture as I took it after I run a patch through it but I’m glad I checked before firing it again. I recently ran into this swindlehurst rimfire rifle also In the loading port and had rust on my bolt and loading ramp. I’m assuming it did this because the boretech products have a lot of water in them apparently according to the SDS. Better make sure if you’re using these products that all traces are removed.

Ps :this is a stainless barrel

Seems like I saw somewhere that it was mentioned that one or more of the Boretech products has water in it and warned that rust could be an issue.
I generally run a wet patch a couple times a day of C4 and Eliminator over 3-4 days, never had an issue. I do run Lock Ease after dry patching the solvents out. Over the winter the gun gets a coating of Hornady One Shot.

Text on the Bore Tech bottles informs users that their products only work as a preservative for short term storage. Best to use a more suitable product for long term storage, several have been cited above.

This is a big problem for bortech, even if it doesn't have water... the instructions say you can leave it in your bore after its all clean and just run a dry patch through it before you shoot next time.

6) Before storing firearm, dampen a patch with C4 Carbon Remover and push through bore. This will protect against rust/corrosion for up to 2 weeks under normal storage conditions.

I would think that after 2 weeks you wouldn't go from protecting to the results the OP is showing. I hope someone lets bortech know what happened.

I used their products for a time (about 3 years ago or so) when I was trying to find an odorless alternative to Shooter's Choice since the odor was bothering my wife who was ill at the time.

No question, C4 does a terrific job removing carbon as does Cu+2 for copper. However, after a while I started getting first shot flyers and the need to re-condition the bore with several shots before the desired POI returned. I also notice a residue forming on the threads of the jag. Incidentally, I did talk to Bore Tech's rep about their products, and he claimed that based on extensive testing, their products do not cause rust even though they are aqueous based.

Besides being expensive, the flyers were something I could not tolerate so I went back to Hoppe's 9 with a bronze brush which is what I used many years ago. All is good since I switched which no one on this Forum will ever believe but that's ok. The varmints I hunt believe it. ;)

I personally run a heavy coat of gun oil down every bore after every cleaning session.

That is because, on numerous occasions, life has thrown unexpected consequences up that caused my shooting plans to be delayed by weeks or months.

I've no interest in dealing with rust in a bore at all. The gun oil is easily removed. The corrosion damage? Nope.

In the past I used a lot of Bore Tech C4 and C2. I always dry patched then run patch soaked with 99% or 91% Isopropyl Alcohol then dry patched then Butch’s oil or other brands of gun oil. No corrosion using such practices. Sometimes I will use my main bore solvent then dry patch then follow with Hoppe’s 9 and Kroil mix then dry patch, alc patch, dry patch, then bore lube patch and 1 dry to finish. It is worth the extra effort to prevent rust/corrosion.

I've been using BoreTech products for a long time. I've never seen this happen and I do use a borescope. If I'm going to shoot the rifle within a couple of weeks, I'll probably just run a few dry patches down the bore after cleaning and do nothing else. If the gun is headed to the safe for some period of time, I run two wet patches of BreakFree CLP followed by two dry patches. So far, so good.

I do also, however, I use a light coat of Hoppe's Gun Oil (mineral oil). Just be careful with a "heavy coat" of oil since it can drain into the trigger group and over time gum up the trigger assembly. This of course assumes you are storing the rifle in the vertical position, muzzle up.

Before I place the rifle back in service, I run a patch of mineral spirits down the bore which removes any oil.
