Bore scope marks

I don't understand?
I thought at the end I suggested getting a new custom barrel
How is this throwing Good money after bad?
There's more to a rifle than the barrel. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Ruger rifles are machined from a casting. Did not Farley try this and had some failures ?

The Ruger American is a Solid Rifle
I don't know if they are cast like the Old Ruger 77's
If this is what you mean???
----------------------------------------------------
Throwing good money at a Cast Receiver.
Aside from that
I've had a couple Ruger 77's with those old crappy cast receivers
That shot 1/2" no problem
22-250 and 220 Swift
-----------------------------------------
I built a Custom 260 Rem on a Ruger American and would say they are better in my opinion than the old 77's
The bolt alone, when I went to thread for a bolt knob, was so hard it kept breaking my carbide tooling
I hit it with an Oxy/Acet torch to try and break the hardening
Kept breaking my carbide (meaning tough bolt, hearty, can beat on it when you get a stuck case)
That and a few other things such as
1. the barrel threads were lubricated instead of loctited, making it easy to remove factory barrel
2. The trigger came in at 1 pound after simply removing the stupid Glock style Safety etc and adjusting with no other trigger work.
3. The 60 Deg 3 Lug bolt is kind of nice
------------------------------------------
Just so many things about a Ruger American impressed me from a custom fun gun build standpoint
And all for $500
Throw a Magpul Hunter Stock with DBM mags and it's a killer deal.
Oh yeah! I put the money for a Krieger on there and it is a grouping machine at 600 yds.
1.5-2" Groups
I would not hesitate to build another on a Ruger American over a Rem 700 now even though I am a hardcore 700 guy
------------------------------------------
Some guys put lots of money on an Old clunky Mauser
Now THAT, I don't understand

That's because those old clunky Mausers will shoot amazingly well if the barrel is good.
Just like those cheap Savages and Cast Ruger Americans.

Meaning, it's largely user preference at that level.

Now, if you have aspirations to shoot competitively in timed events, any one of those choices will handicap you. Doesn't mean you can't upgrade and work around it. But it's going to add difficulty.

Those borescope pics are a classic example of a rifle that's been stored with significant areas of fouling and has ended up with corrosion under the fouling. Have seen it -many- times.

Once it's happened, there's no retrieving it but as has been said, it may still shoot half reasonably. Dealt with a 788 .308 with a similar looking bore and it still shot surprisingly well. Suck it and see as they say.
I just wemt thru this with a barrel maker I won't name here, but those so called pits were that way after it was rifled. I always borescope the barrel before I install it no matter who the legendary barrel maker. By the way they refunded my money after I sent them a borescope video. I don't think it is corrosion but was there when the barrel was born either from a dull tool or not enough lubrication, or both.

I like the way you think.
I mean we're not hanging a full contour 338 Lapua, 32 inch barrel off a cast receiver
But they've been shooting varmint cartridges very accurately for years right?
Plus guys like us after bedding the chamber area, helps take a lot of force off the receiver
to prevent any flex.
People should consider the physics of what's going on.
-------------
Plus those Old 77's had the most beautiful Gloss Blue Finish
-------------
Given the choice even steven between a Rem 700 Chromoly or a Ruger 77
Of course I prefer to build on a Rem 700
But ...those Ruger 77's shoot just fine and we used to get them for about $400 bucks from gun shows
Still shooting great and often with a Leupold still attached.
-------------
As far as the Ruger American NOT being cast
Good to know, and thanks for those who posted about that
I really do like those receivers for building custom fun guns on.
They're great.
