I had forgotten about the interference between the counterbore and bolt lugs. Made a noticeable difference for me.

David Milisock: Thanks for your comments. I admire your shooting skill; your groups beyond 100 yards are enviable. How hard is your bolt lift? ​

I would tell you if I could but I've never measured the resistance, all I can tell you is that after firing I can open the bolts on all my rifles easily with my pinky finger. I have a 103 year old Remington Pattern 17 that had a sticky bolt. I degreased the bolt and action the worked it a few hundred times with lapping compound. In the field it just doesn't matter.

I appreciate all your comments and suggestions. I reviewed a dozen threads on several forums. I sanded inside the bolt again, and I lightly polished the outside of the bolt. I degreased the spring. My bearing grease works better than some Moly DiSulfide action lube I found in a LGS. The bolt lift is lighter than it was before I started this trip, but not nearly as light as Vera's appears to be. I won't cut the spring.
I have recently fired several 5-shot groups at 100 yards that are under half an inch, including one at 5/16" and one at 3/8."

I'll be tickled to get consistent groups like that. Still working up loads on my 700 6XC. Hope to have a few good ones before it gets any colder, to mull over the long winter. Mine is stiff also but I'm not so eager to mess with it until I have it grouping as well as I am capable of.

Agreed, that's better than meat on the table accuracy. Now for the true accuracy in the field, PRACTICE field positions.

I am not to the point where my good groups are consistent. I gots to watch that pesky wind more closely. The propeller on my windvane warped in the AZ heat, but I dug out an old propeller and put it back into action.
btw. I forgot to mention that I pulled the barrel and opened the counterbore in the barrel about .020," which removed the contact of bolt and counterbore AND improved bolt lift a bit.
