Bolt issues help pics added

On my remington 40x the bolt is chewing up my cases. The rim area gets really rough after a few firings on either a 6 BR or my Dashers. I'm thinking it's the extractor but I just don't know. The loads aren't that hot 30.4 grains Varget for the BR and 32.5 for the dasher. Over time the cases get so rough I can't even slip them in the shell holder to prime them. What do I need to look for to fix this problem? The problem area is the web side of the rim not the primer side.

I'd sure appreciate any help you guys can offer to getting this fixed. It's always done this and it's time to fix it I'm tired of buying brass because I can't get it to fit the shell holders any longer.

Re: Bolt issues help

Do the cases also show marks on the opposite side up near the shoulder? I had a similar problem with a 700 when I was using a full length ejector spring. The short cases were at such an acute angle that the shoulder area was making contact with the front of the right lug race. The damage was occurring as the case tried to straighten to clear the abutment and the far side of the rim was being forced back into the bolt nose.

I'll look but the bolt doesn't have an ejector if that matters.

Re: Bolt issues help

Sure sounds like a sharp edge or burr on the extractor or maybe the rivet came loose?

I don't think it is the same problem then. My issue cured itself when I took the ejector out. Sorry, I was hoping to have a helpful answer.

Re: Bolt issues help

Sounds like the extractor: either it is very rough or the extractor recess on the bolt is not deep enough. I had a problem with an extractor recess cut too shallow. This presented as slight difficulty closing the bolt and then causing major shaving of brass on the case rims. The case rims looked like hell after a few firings. The fix was to send several bolts to Greg Tannel for some machining. He took less than a week to fix 3 bolts and they now function flawlessly with zero brass shaving.

Thanks for the info Scott, I have an email sent to Greg now waiting for his reply. I may have to send him the bolt if it's something I can't repair myself.

Re: Bolt issues help

James,,,I have had the same issue in the past with Remington bolts and factory extractors,,,look at it under magnification,,,there is a burr or sharp edge somewher that needs smoothed or rounded off a lilttle,,,I uses a die grinder and cravex wheel,,,an oxice wheel will do it also,,the extractor was tooo tall and had to forced over the rim,,,,Roger

Re: Bolt issues help

Here are the photos of the brass,

I took the extractor out and the edges were very sharp so I buffed them with a polishing wheel to knock off that sharp edge.
