Bolt Bushing ??

Hello All,
I am most likely going to have my Rem bolt bushed and re do the firing pin for sure. Is the bushing just pressed in or is it brazed ?? Has anyones ever come out ?? Pros and Cons of doing this to your bolt ?? This is going to be for my 6BR build.
Thanx again,
Dave

cant go wrong had mine done am very happy with it rem 700 ger tan done it also very quick turnaround dont know about being pressed in just know no more pierced primers regards shooter63

If properly done, the bushing is threaded in and an adhesive is applied before screwing it in. That adhesive can be lock thread, JB Weld, epoxy or other compounds. After the bushing is inserted, it should be drilled and reamed to slightly larger than firing pin size and then the face should be turned for a seamless match to the bolt face. The reasonfor the bushing is to reduce the size of the hole or the space between the firing pin and boltface to reduce blow back from blown primers to enter the bolt itself. I have never heard of a professionally done, properly installed bushing ever coming out. If this is an older Remington and if there is significant play between the bolt and action, you might conider having the "bumps" installed on the outside of the bolt so that there is less wobble when the bolt is closed and also moved fore and aft.

Thanx for replies....I am also going to use Gre Tan rifles. My bolt only has about 40 rounds thru it. Replacing the pin and shroud...it's a "J" bolt. This was bought really cheap a few yrs ago...new 700VLS in 6mm Rem. I have three of them and since they don't make it anymore I still have a new unfired one and one with about 300 rds thu it. This one will be the donner for the 6BR.
Thanx again,
Dave

If you are not going to have it done professionally. Read Jim Borden's article on how to do it properly. You can not afford a catistrophic bolt head failure.

I am by no means a gunsmith !! It would most diffidently be done by a professional !! Are you saying the Gre Tan is not or he doesn't fit them properly? Was also going to use his bolt shroud and firing pin. To get rid of my "J" bolt firing pin and shroud set up from factory. Is there a better one to use ??
Dave

I don't think he is dissing Gre Tan at all, just suggesting that you have it done by a professional.
Changing the extractor to AR 15 extractor or Sako extractor is done on a regular basis by many gunsmiths. Doing so does corrupt the "ring of steel" concept that Remingtom employs. To do so would be your choice, just be advised of this change in factory specs. As a side note, I have not heard of anyone being physically hurt by this change, others may have an example.

I will send my bolt out this week to Gre Tan...I have heard nothing but good reviews of his products !! I just wanted another opinion that's all.
Thanx again,
Dave

I had a very butchered bolt I bought from a guy and after about 50 shots the original repair was junk.I called gre-tan and sent it to him and got it back in a week, and have now put hundreds of rounds through it and it is working perfectly. His work is superb and a real nice guy to boot.

If it were me.......Sell your bolt....buy a PTG one piece with their firing pin assembly and you're golden. It'll cost you a few bucks, but not too much more than sending your bolt off and getting it bushed.

In the end you'll have a sexy bolt and be out $100 or so.

My .2 cents

We are going to have a special next week on bolts . The One pc. Remington .062 pin hole bolt will have a .400 pin length and the firing pin will never leave the hole raceway. This is like the Marsh,Surgeon and match bolts we make and a perfect ground size with no ugly sleeves. Thanks Dave
