Bob243Ackley - need opinion here pls.

I'm fireforming 25-06 using cream-of-wheat method with
700x powder ...what amount of powder for the 25-06 can I try?
What is the 700x powder amount you use for the 243AI ?
My 20PPC fireforming worked extremely well, thanks.

Hi Al,

Using 700X, I would start around 7 to 8 grains for both cartidges, and then work the charges up until you start seeing that the fireform does not get a "sharper" look to the corners on the shoulder and neck junctions. You will then be at the maximum charges that will give you the best fireform. Make sure that you put a large pinch of polyester filler over the Cream of Wheat to keep it located above the powder charge properly. I usually dry brush every 10 rounds with a stiff nylon brush. I have used this method for years and it has served me well for fireforming my Ackley rounds. As always, make sure that you use good ear protection since these fireform loads are as loud as a regular round. As a side note, if you shoot these off in your garage, they do a great job of cleaning the concrete floors.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

Thanks for replying 243AI Bob,
I used 10 grains 700X to fireform 20PPC brass.
There was no black smudge on the exterior of the brass which is a great indication of maximum pressures being exercised.
I had filled the case to the mouth with cream of wheat and compressed the c-of-w to the base of the neck using a pencil. The poly is rolled in my fingers and tucked into the case mouth and also compressed to the top of the case mouth. Any loose poly hairs above the case mouth were trimmed with sharp scissors.
Process worked great !
My 243AI will be fireformed the same way and I'll work my way up with 700X
However, 25-06 I'm firing live bullets at the range and developing load data at same time.
The noise level of the 20PPC was very high and would double in a garage so you do need plugs and muffs, as always when shooting.
Take care
Al
