Blown primer with hunting loads

I wouldn't waste my breath calling Hornady. I did and came with good attitude, a ton of data to support it, how we got the data, etc. They basically said go fly a kite. Mind you this wasn't regarding a single box of ammo, rather 6+ cases from the same "lot".

I was livid after the phone call. Might as well have just called Comcast, Time Warner, Cox or Century Link. Would have gotten the same service and the same outcome. My solution is to never buy any of their garbage product anymore.

Friend was handloading 6.5 creedmoor shooting thru/with a magnospeed crono looking for a accurate, near peak pressure load. After he fired all of his handloads, and found a great node, he fired some factory "H" loads with the same projectile he had handloaded. Speed of the factory stuff was much faster and very HOTTTTT. Fortunately, no damage to the rifle or shooter. We were very surprised how hot they were.

It just depend on the case of ammo. Ours had 100fps+/- within the same "Lot". The cases within the "Lot" had different initials on them (different people). Hornady stated that their spec is and I quote: "60fps +/- of the speed printed on the box". So 120fps extreme spread is "Match" ammo for Hornady.

I think one of the guys on Hornady's line makes awesome factory ammo. The guy next to him is drunk.

Don't be afraid,it's only a call. Your paper trail just ended, call em or you have nobody to blame but yourself.

Never said I did not intend to call them. Just that I am too busy right now to deal with a manufacturer, whose ammo I will probably never purchase again. I have simply heard too many stories that sound an awful lot like mine.

I had an issue with Federal ammo too. They responded to my email within two business days and offered to refund my purchase, as well as pay for UPS to pick up the unused ammo and return it to Federal, so they can inspect it. No questions asked. That's good customer service, and it's a sign that the manufacturer is genuinely concerned enough to want the ammo back.

"Hotdog in a hallway" syndrome...
Factory ammo leans toward min. SAAMI spec, for insurance purposes.
Factory rifles lean toward max. SAAMI SPEC, for insurance purposes...

Result?
Potential excessive headspace, which may manifest itself as over pressure condition.
Just speculating, so can't know for sure...

Sorry for your deal, that sucks!
All I know, if I were building a rifle around the use of 'factory' ammo, I'd be dang sure to have Mr. Smithy match the reamer to said ammo. Not only would that help toward achieving accuracy potential, you'd be extra sure that you ain't stretching the crap outta that (min.spec) brass...

I just had an epiphany. After comparing a few casings from different manufacturers, it is very clear that brass is very different. The tolerances between Federal and Hornady were not even close (Federal was tight, and Hornady was loose). Federal would not chamber, and Hornady blew a primer. Assuming that you are using a factory rifle, wouldn't it make sense to choose whatever brass most accurately mimics the manufacturer's brass? I have a Tikka, and they guarantee MOA using factory Sako ammo. Duh! Their chambers are manufactured for compatibility with their ammo. How did I miss this?

Bought a bag of 300 Win mag brass, didnt have any prior experience with belted cases. Hornady bulk on the bag...? really strange stuff stretches , stretches when neck sized, stretches when FLS maintaining shoulder contact. Bought a box Of WIN factory loads and the brass difference is amazing. Doesnt stretch, sizes well, etc. Several reloads without issue on Win brass. Not so good on the "H" stuff, wwith incipient separations on about 4 loadings. On the other hand I have about 150 pieces of 375 R brass from the "H" people and to mess up a description the stuff is bulletproof. Rare stretching, little expansion and have reloaded some cases 20 or so times. Musta come from the line with the gun who only drinks coffee.

Was it the first rd fired? Give more of the story, you are basically calling a company out yet you're leaving out 90% of the story.

No it was not the first round, was the last? I posted this to see if anyone had an answer or similar problems with no intentions of trashing anyone. it appears that I'm not the only one thats had a problem. So are you calling all of the threads chickenshit?

I am dumb...but can somebody please clue me in on how exactly "moisture" in the chamber causes a primer to end up pierced??????? I've been at this for quite a while now, fired many a rifle in weather that surely had to cause chambers to be anywhere from very slightly moisturized to slap ass soaked and everything in between....I have never pierced, blown or blanked any primers ever due to moisture.

A few have chimed in, Hornady ammo not the best. Your post makes people make assumptions. Disclose the facts or shut up. It's that simple, a pimer was blown, a company made an assumption, big friggin deal.

Wow you really need to chill out, read the thread from MSINC about moisture.

Spray your ammo with water, see how it plays out, may work, may not, Not the answer here.
I'm not defending who made your ammo, no clue who it is. Just saying you're making a claim w/o facts.

Milo ,I really don't no what you want to hear. I blew a primer with the ammo I bought and have never had this happen? Barrel not dirty, no moisture, not the first shot, ammo clean, What else would you think it could be? The primer was not just pierced but GONE. Vanished

"I bought a couple boxes of hunting loads from a well known company and blew a primer. Wrote the company and they told me I had to have moisture in the rifle chamber or barrel. I dry patched before I shot and it has not rained here in weeks?"

I surely did not take it that you were looking for help in solving the problem. Give more info on the ammo and maybe someone can help, seems as though the maker of it does not care too much about it.

Last I knew Copper Creek ammo was working for you.
