Billet Ammo Caddy

You're absolutely right, Sonny. Please don't base your production - or even make blanks - based on the response you get on this site.

I've been making handmade 15 round, high-end burl, laminated, and hardwood cartridge blocks for about 20 years for my own use in IBS Score Benchrest competition. Very labor intensive effort, especially the finish work and clear-coating. Along the way I sold a few to friends, who urged me a number of times to make some to sell. I finally took their advice and made up about a half dozen. I went on the "General Topics" Forum, posted photos, and gave a little background on them. The response was great with more than a few posters interested in buying.

Fast forward - I moved the effort to the classifieds, re-posted photos and prices, and sold exactly one (1) block. And, even that was not a 15 round, but a custom 25 round one. After a few weeks and no further responses, I took the ad down. Lesson learned: A good idea-product is not necessarily a profitable one and/or worth the effort.

Now - if you are determined to do this, just make a few for a widely used case diameter (.473" maybe) and put them in the classifieds. It won't take long to find out if can sell enough to make it worthwhile. Worst case - you'll end up with them for your own use. Good luck.

A LOT OF GUYS MAKE THAES BLOCKS AND THAT IS WHY YOU COULD NOT SELL MANY, lots at major short range br, Sinclair’s and so on

Many can be purchased for 75 bucks so you may have some high end in your mind but beauty is in the eye of the beholder in reguards to wood samples. Jeff

depending on color. Perhaps. Jeff

the feelings of happiness are still there once the price is forgotten,

Color preferences? I was thinking a neutral color like black.

Trying to get the cost down. That is always a big factor, but the button and hinge system isn't something I make and they are pretty expensive.

just my .02 cents, but I agree with Jefferson. whatever color you pick, it should pop, black is cool but mundane. you have a few decisions to make, I don't envy you:(. but whatever color, you already know, I want one:cool:

I think McGraw may be on to something here. That said, I do get something special three times every year. Anniversary, B-day, and Christmas.
I suck up a lot, flowers and Ghirardelli chocolates every month. That "Happy wife, happy life..." thing.

Jaguar offers a gorgeous "Italian Racing Red" metallic.

Put me down for one with 1 EA. Of each insert. PM me payment details and I'll pay upfront. As far as color guys, he is anodizing not painting. Black or red is fine with me.

All, keep in mind that all anodizing isn't created equal. Black is the most durable color against UV light and is far less susceptible to fading. Red, violet, blue, and copper fade at twice the rate of black. I only say this because I imagine like me, a lot of you shoot in direct sun.

The engraving is what would make it pop IMO. Pretty colors are fun too. Red, blue, green, and copper/gold are some of my favorites.

Here is a couple of parts I make that have post anodizing engraving. Really makes the parts pop.TRX WP Cover2.jpg TRX Covers.jpg

about how much would it cost for me to anodize 1 or 3 or 5 or them if I bought them not anodized from you so I can add that to the cost from you plain, just a thought, trying to make this work
just trying to help with marketing then I get them done in the color I want and you get some sales,

also until we see a finished product and see pictures of it open and closed and the mechanism it is a little difficult to say we are in

I am from Canada so might try to get a group but for one shipping rate united states postal service ground

Anodizing is done by lot minimums. Generally $65 per color is the minimum. This is more of a feeling out post to see if anybody would want them. I make good quality stuff. Nobody has ever accused me of making junk ;) I wouldn't make you something that I wouldn't want myself.

Dig the enthusiasm. They'll be very difficult to make with how I want to make them. The hinges are really unique and it'll take some trial and error for me to get everything just the way I like. My stuff is always perfect, and that takes time. We can keep the talks going, but expect them to take me a little time to iron out all the kinks before I am comfortable selling them to all you.

I'm going to be hoping for anything but black. Raw would be fine with me also so I could just get them coated any color. Black absorbs heat. Heat is not my friend.

so now that it is about 65 bucks per run for me with a few in the RAW

the question for you is it EASIER for you to make a bunch in the RAW for selling at say 35 to 40 less than anodized (which helps you get sales)

and being 40 less and also not having to buy dull black (as an example))although shiny black is OK) and then getting the colour we think we want

is that a win win or just silly

Jeff

a better explanation
for those who have a colour in mind for all their stuff, powder measure stand, anything metal on their bench or bipod, work colours and so on they will want to have raw in order to pick their favorite colour for this product,

case in point, the plastic boxes were made in different colours and sold at short range br matches and I know the total sold in a year depended on which colours were chosen , a lot were black but a lot were 4 or 5 different colours, so if they just sold black their total sales were about 50 % less i.e. colours made up half the sales for the year

Jeff, while the minimum is $65, I can anodize a lot of parts for that $65. I'd venture to guess by not anodizing a box, it would only reduce the cost $5-6. In other words, it would cost me $65 for one color whether I anodize one box, or 10+.

If this becomes such a problem (colors) I can just do them in raw aluminum. I thought anodizing them would be a nice touch, but if it becomes a sticking point, and an issue where people don't want to buy them because I don't have their color, then I just won't do it. I can't afford to make 20 or 30 boxes so I can have 10 of each color on hand. It doesn't make sense to me at least financially. If I had more interest, maybe I could justify it, but I am not sure there is enough interest for me to make a bunch of these.

Just make raw before you don’t make them, silver looks really good too, consider taking deposits and decide what color YOU like and anodize them that color. I’ll get one no matter the color
