Biggest chambering for .473 bolt face

My dad just gave me a 700 Remington in a 270. The barrel is shot and I would like to re-chamber to something with more punch. Something like a 300 WIN would be nice.

What are my options? Can the bolt face be machined bigger?

Thanks for any help.

No problem with opening the bolt face to take the 300 WinMag, and it will then be the same size as the newer Short Mags in case you decide to go that route.....

Montana, theres an excellent smith in your state located at FT. Shaw, his name is Kirby Allen. You can email him at kballen@3rivers.net He will tell you what ever you want to know including the rates for his work.

You have many options available to you. You may choose to not modify your existing bolt and just buy a new repalcement bolt with a PT&G bolt with a magnum boltface. The machining cost vs the repalcement cost would be very close. You may need/want to modify your magazine box to single stack feed also. The change from a standard cartridge to a belted magnum can come with some feeding issues. By keeping all the pieces you can make your more valuable and versatile.

The 30-06 Ackley Improved and the 30 Gibbs will get you close 300 win mag speeds and will pass the 300 mag with it factory loadings, these are both based off of the 30-06 case just blown out versions
Another option would be the 280 ackley, it'll shoot a bit flatter and hit harder at long range with the proper bullets.

If you going to have the gun rebarreld, in mmy oppinion its a good idea to just have the action blueprinted while your at it. I personaly would get an over sized PT&G bolt with the Sako extractor, this way when it fitted to the action you will have the same benifits as a sleeved bolt but with a better desgine. I'd also recommend haviong the Wyatt's box added especiay if your stepping up to the mags.

I was looking through a reloading book and noticed those two ackleys. It looks like they do real well until you get into the bigger bullets. I was reading the Nosler book. Is there any other good info out there on these two cartridges?

Would a long action magnum bolt drop right in? I unfortunately don't have a lot of money to spend on this project since I spent most of my wad on a Savage F-class and scope. So, I am looking to be very budget oriented here.

Thanks.

going to the mag will cost you almost as much as just buying a donor by the time you are done.. seen many 300 mags in the $3-400 range. your going to have $175 in the bolt with the rail work. you'll need a box and follower also for a mag. you still have a barrel to buy and pay to have it installed.. long way around for what is offered already... the AI 06' case would be my choice if budget is a concern. the 280 rocks..
