Bigger bullet hole theory

So if we should ever contest a long range score match again, I believe the good shooting 6mm should have an advantage at the 300 yard leg.

And why I've been working on a 7mm. It's the in between
bigger bullet theory. i have a lot stacked against me,
but it's new ground and makes for good conversation after

I used to watch guys at 20yd indoor archery tournaments shoot arrows almost as big around as your thumb. They did this to achieve this theorical advantage that you are talking about. In actuality they had arrows that was so over spined that they had a bow that was way out of tune and use BS tricks to get it to shoot right. Pick the most accurate chambering you can find, learn to load for it, learn to read wind , and learn to keep the rifle in tune. and don't look for a theoretical advantage.

If it was a theoretical advantage, then PPC’s would still be in wide use at IBS and NBRSA score competitions. As it is, they are dominated by 30’s.

I believe that the 30BR is the most accurate cartridge ever, and i own a 6PPC. I don't think that the larger diameter makes them win I think that the 30BR is at least as accurate as a 6PPC maybe more so, and the fact that they last almost forever means they don't have down time fitting new barrels and tuning. I think that the only downside to a 30BR is more wind drift.

You are certainly entitled to that opinion. The trend in caliber neutral UBR is away from the 30 and more towards the PPC. Barrel life is not a factor for me.

Like you, I also shoot PPC and 30BR. I frequently switch barrel the same 13.5 pound gun for UBR competitions. I've done well with both calibers and not so well with both. I'd never shoot IBS score with my best PPC barrel because the math tells me I'm at a disadvantage. Math doesn't lie. For UBR, it doesn't matter because there is no mathematical advantage. Show up with your best stuff, read the wind and have at it.

I don't have a 6PC cause it is an inaccurate cartridge, they may well be the best. I had a friend that used to be a member here that passed from cancer about 6 or 7 years ago he had a 30 BR that was unbelievable. When the barrel dies on my 6 it will come back as a 30 of some kind. Maybe a 30 major so I don't have to change the bolt face. I am so up on the fence about what shoots best I don't think there is a bad choice between a 6PPC, a 30BR, or one of the 30 PPCs. i just don't think the diameter helps to such a point as to make your decision for you. My wife and i have been assigned to the safety team at church tonight we get to see all of the smiling kids and their parents at both services, and since she is working with me we will each get to attend one of the services. That is my idea of how to start the new year right!!! Merry Christmas to you

if you shoot UBR it wont matter.....SHOOT IBS 30BR ...........best choice imo is 30BR so you can do both the 30BR is a amazing round.

I decided to try something odd. I tried out the Hornady Interlock bullet for shooting benchrest target. The hole was clearly bigger than Berger VLD's. The target was pinned to a plywood, so it could make a difference as well. On the right hand side- Berger VLD.

Maybe reach around the back side of the target paper and close the hole back up as best you can, then study the hole to see how clean the bullet went through. The shape of the hole will show you if your bullet has any yaw or if it is flying true. A nice round hole is the key.

I made myself a target backer that I attach my paper to so I can see from the bench what my bullets are doing.

There was a guy complaining at a match about the bullet hole size and the disadvantage of shooting a smaller caliber. Someone popped up and told him shoot closer to the center, problem solved.

We don’t use that rule in the USA. There is nothing right about making bullet holes equal IMO.

Agree entirely. If the the larger diameter catches a ring edge that a smaller bullet would miss, this is just a reflection of reality shooting any target. It's misguided IMO for that reason to try to "correct" for reality in a mistaken sense of fairness.

You want the benefits of a larger bullet, shoot the larger bullet.
