BI-POD KNOWLEDGE

The accutac is a good one. I use atlas just because thats what i have.

What is the technique for loading a bipod? I use Harris bipods for hunting, but have shot many small groups with a bipod off a bench in load development, without knowing about loading a bipod. Now I usually shoot off a rest at the bench.

Its most important on the wobbly ones like harris and the even wobblier clones. I clamp a 2x4 on the front of the bench or use the loading edge on a mat

If you want a heavier bipod, bipod by Henry Rempel out of Canada is heavier than most. there is one for sale right now, you might have to buy an adaptor to use it on picatinny rail.

The Arca rail makes the setup far more versatile than the pic rail. You can adjust the position of the bipod far easier, R&R is easier, lots of attachments available, and if you want to use the gun on bags, it is smooth and flat, works great on bags. Arca can be adapted to pretty much any of the brands of bipods.

Loading the bipod is a very misunderstood thing. It really wasn't a "thing" until Jacob Bynum from Rifles Only brought it up and started teaching it in the mid 2000s. People had done it but really didn't know they were doing it. Loading is a very slight lean into the bipod to take up some slack so the rifle recoils right into the shoulder and no slop there so the rifle and body are recoiling as one. It's something that people do and don't even realize they do it most times. When the rifle is on the bench and you slide in behind it and get your rear bag set and put your face on the comb and give a slight lean while getting your sight picture, THAT is loading. If you need a piece of wood or straps to hold the rifle while "loading" then you aren't loading you are pushing the rifle. Use less push.

Also there is no real slack in a Harris bipod. There is more in Atlas or Ckyepods and that is where that little slack take up is more beneficial. A very slight lean into the rifle to take it up. Not a push.

I shoot almost exclusively prone from a bipod and have Harris, Atlas, and Ckye. I like Ckye the best. It is strong/solid and very adjustable. Atlas is my second favorite. All of my bipods are setup for ARCA rails.

For the experienced bi-pod user, is there something better than the Harris and what is the best brand for the money? I want to swap over to the rail attachment type and have read about Acu-Tac, Atlas, and Mag-Pul. What say you?
Was kinda late getting into the bipod world myself. But so far, here are my first hand observations:
-Almost anything beats nothing.
-If I’m consistent in execution, I smile.
-Bought a Harris, it is lighter and seems to be quicker to deploy/adjust in the field.
-Bought an Atlas, a bit heavier, slower to get in motion, but I think I’m going to like it.
Great question, great post, great responses. Hopefully we’ll all learn something useful.

Ok, so "loading" is always forward. When I use a Harris off a fairly smooth concrete bench top, the rubber feet have more than enough grip to allow some load without slipping the feet. Some of you may be using more pressure and require a stop such as Dusty described. If there's an essay on this subject somewhere, I'd like to read it.

Nope did not know one existed. LOL. Where can I view it?

Many more to choose from. I personally use the Duplin but I really like the Joypod. Don't shoot much FTR these days so I'll probably stick with the Duplin for the times I do. Mostly FOpen these days. But, when I do shoot stuff of a standard Bipod, this is my choice:

As far as bipod loading, all my rifles and bipods like a little different touch. My rifles vary between id say 2 lbs of load to zero. You need test to find out and things chage with surface (concrete, vs dirt, vs gravel).

I was shooting the NF ELR match this year and was in 4th place after day one. One the first stage of day 2, my scope cap slipped and I lost my zero. So I switched from my 284 to my backup 6.5 CM. The rifles are twins, the ballistcs very similar (184 vs 156 at same speed), and they both shoot amazing. Once I switched, I went from cant-miss to poor hit rate. I couldnt figure it out and weas really frustrated. On the way to the awards the issue dawned on me: it was bipod loading. The 284 likes a little drive and the 6.5 CM likes zero. In the middle of the match, I was so engrossed in the match and staying with the conditions that I neglected to make the adjustment in bipod load.

Yea, I'm going to the picatinny rail. I'm shooting my hunting rifles off the bench. Thanks for the clarification of different rails.
For hunting rifles, I REALLY like the Hatch bipod. It is so versitile its amazing. I can shoot anywhere from prone to sitting (almost standing) with it in any place and any condition. For its weight, proce and versatility its unbeatable for day to day big game hunting out West.

I use Harris , have recently bought some cheaper ones for .22s and an AR.... There's definitely a difference.... On the last one I bought for the AR the weight is the problem , it's a Caldwell.... The other is on a .22 it's light weight but kinda flimsy.... For a heavy hunting rifle I like the light weight Harris fixed...The one on my 12 pound heavy barrel .308 has worked great....
