FORUM NOTICE Beware Member Trattoria Soliciting Sales.

Apparently, "spoofing" began as a legit operation, like having some business guy create a random number to shield his real number while conducting legit business using his personal telephone, using VOIP technology. It as morphed into a paradise for bad guys who can make up any number including caller ID. I just got one & called back and was informed - "welcome to the new access line, our employee's (intelligible) credit union's voice access line system" Then to access your account, " please enter ….. & password " Real easy to make up numbers, blocking them is ineffective as new ones can be made quick & easy. NOMOROBO blocked this one after one ring.

My work was a victim of spoofing. Apparently a spam auto dialer was blasting calls to people 5 times in a row. A random number shows on their caller ID so they call back and it forwards to our internet sales division. I'm one of the head product tech guys, I have to answer the phones. We were getting about 50 calls per hour on all 4 lines from people! We ended up changing our direct line number because of it.

The sad part was some of the people calling, one elderly woman said she left her entire cart of groceries in the store and ran outside to call us because her husband was in hospice care and she thought it was "the call," Another elderly person thought it was distant family he hadn't heard from calling to tell him happy birthday and he was disappointed (I wished him a very happy birthday) when it wasn't.

Ended up turning our phones off for 3 days until it was fixed.

My cell phone is on the rear view mirror on my truck (rarely used). Never sent a text. Like to talk personally with people I do business with on my land line. When I purchase an item, I like to use cashiers checks from my bank. Never used my computer to buy anything. Don't know if that shields me from hacks, maybe some of are electronic experts could enlighten me. I'm pretty old school. Got my one and only postal money order a few months ago. Didn't enjoy my experience with public servants, or dealing with the great unwashed in line.

What baffles me is why would a scammer target people who's favorite thing to do in the world is putting lots of little pieces of lead in the same hole from long distances. Just doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do, kinda like poking sleeping bears in my eyes.

Well, it's not like the shooter is gonna shoot the guy over it.

I never would suggest that some shoot anyone for any reason outside of survival. But I find that by staying out of the business of scamming people, I can sleep with both eyes closed, and sleep quite soundly at that. Sorry if it was taken in a way that was not intended.
