FORUM NOTICE Beware Member Trattoria Soliciting Sales.

I get fake VOIP, voice over internet protocol, "spoofed" phone calls almost daily. I think most members also suffer from this stuff. A caller may be in Nigeria and use a Montana area code, just calling thru his computer. I am uncertain how it would work to call back a "spoofed" number - would a call to a Brea CA area code and certain number code be routed to a computer in Nigeria? Incoming spoofed calls are impossible to trace and are an epidemic now. I seem to remember one or more IPA's were identified as a "suspected proxy server". I don't like knowing about this stuff but get drawn into it.

That's why I love using a smartphone...it is so easy to permanently block these and other numbers you never want to hear from again....poof.....blocked, gone, deleted.

If the number was ”spoofed”, blocking it on your device will not prevent scammers from calling again. They only have to “spoof” a different number.

I don't answer my phone unless they are in the caller ID. If it is a legitimate caller, they will leave a message, fortunately, 99% don't.

Thanks Boss, you are one of the reasons that this site is so successful.

Android is a barrier, I have my phone set up to only accept calls from those on my contact list. An exception is "alerts" and I periodically get them - like so and so has failed to report for a probation meeting or such. I have no connection to any court system. Malwarebytes offers Android protection.

Spoofers can put fake caller ID's out but rarely leave voice messages but sometimes do. I got a spoofed caller that did leave a voice message - he ID'd himself as "deputy Watson" from the "deputy department" and said nothing more. Our land line gets hit with 5-7 spoofed calls every week but NOMOROBO blocks them after 1 ring. We have the option of only accepting callers on a list but new legit callers happen and the list would involve more than 100 numbers and would still exclude legit callers. I got a spoofed call using the legit SSA number last week.

Trattoria might not be calling from Brea CA. "Deputy Watson" was not calling from Great Falls MT.

Yes! I know a guy that was. Somehow, they can start getting your emails and start changing passwords and accounts and credit cards. Beware!

Someone likely stole them by setting a keystroke logger on your machine [usually from porn sites] or bought it off of the dark web. When you start getting emails from yourself that's a clue that someone probably has your password so you need to change it pronto.
