Best way to calibrate beam scales?

I have a few bullets kept that weigh close to charge weights range I often use. With a level surface for the scale and clean properly functioning beam, I will calibrate with a bullet. Than the only issue I have is the factory error, usually +,- a grad.

I know this is an old thread and i have been away for a while but i just had to give a shout out and big thanks to Boyd and John and all who provided advice on how to "fix" the problem with my M5 scales. Its never just one thing and after a few minor tweaks, including levelling the thing correctly to begin with the scale is working perfectly.

This ancient and outdated technology for weighing powder helped me win this years Hawks Ridge 1000 yard "Outlaw" shootout Saturday with 50 3x score....thanks again guys! Bill

Started with an RCBS 10-5 in 1975. It served me well for years.

Eventually "graduated" to Midway, Lyman 1200, and Acculab Vic-123 digitals and suffered through all the drifting issues. I even tried one of the celebrated cheapy's on Amazon...all to no avail.

Returned to ol' RCBS 10-5 and tuned it myself using Boyd's tips but still not quite satisfied.

Recently purchased a "Minty Ohaus 10-10" from @sparker.

Finally nirvana...."No drift to quell, no static to ground, Sparker's 10-10 is best of all."

Cant afford $1000.00+ digital lab balances but my old Lyman m5 and Reading#1 scales are consistent enough to give low single digit SD and ES....but frankly i think my brass prep has a lot to do with those numbers too. I use a single bullet to calibrate with but i would bet lunch this is not a best practice. I have Pacific check weights but they are old and tarnished and how they are marked don't match what the scales say. What would be a better and economical way to calibrate so i really know what the powder charges weigh? i could buy a couple of good check weights but the hobby budget for rest of this year is low, very low.

Also sometimes the old lyman sticks...with light charges i can pour all the powder in the pan but the beam wont move until i tap it...this is really frustrating. Any help with this problem would also be greatly appreciated.
Are the pivot points clean and dry? Are they damaged in ANY way at all? I use a second scale and if the two are within a tenth, its all good for me. Im not trying to win a benchrest match.

They need to be calibrated? Huh, who knew?

I've been using the same RCBS 10 • 10 for almost 45 years now, seems to work fine.
