Best way to add weight

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
I have a rifle that needs to gain some weight......

As is 15.5625lbs.

I need this to just miss the 17lb. weight to make LG.

What would be the best way to add the weight?

Looks like i need 1.4375lbs. to make 17lbs. so that would be 23ozs.

Phil.

I add # 7 1/2 lead shot to the butt. I do NOT use glue or anything else. I just let it rattle around in there. I think it works as a great vibration damper.

I do basically the same thing with the 7 1/2 shot except I put in a plastic bank with some bedding compound. When it dries you can pull it out of the butt and it is formed perfectly to the contour of the hole.

Personally, I feel that if you weigh your rifles to a ten thousandth of a pound (.7 gr), that you may have a case of overkill going there. ;D Also, although the common practice is to add weight to the butt, I would take a look at how your rifle is balanced and how it reacts as it recoils, and think about how the placement of the additional weight might be done to best benefit the rifle's tracking.

You didn't say what kind of stock you have. If you can stand the weight being at the rear, a stainless butt plate or spacer between the stock and pad...if you use one. In some stocks, you can put in in the wrist area, where a grip cap would be. You could make a grip cap to cover the work....even inlet the cap in if you want, so not to ever hit the rear bag. If conditions allow, keep the weight low in the stock and strive for good balance.

On my BR rifle I added a third screw to the buttplate, cut piece of steel shaft to desired weight, drill and tap. I have different weights for all my barrels.
