Best value in Youth 22lr

So can I do better than the Savage Rascal in the sub $200 category?
Is there an option that maybe has the ability to switch between single shot and repeater?
I love the single for targets, but in the squirrel woods a quick follow up is nice at times.
Boy is not very big I believe I need a sub 12" lop for now . The darn Henry youth lever will need to wait a couple years. 13 lop

Depending on the size of the youth the Marlin 15YN (short stocked) or a basic Savage MK II (longer/normal stocked) are what we use for the various sized youth in FAS classes. I haven't priced them lately, but I'd expect either to be north of $200 but less than $300. Both are single shots and the Savage can be had in Left hand version.

Best value is hard to measure. Sub $200 is hard to find, so I'd say stick with the savage, but also know that it comes with drawbacks.

I started my son with a CZ 455 Scout. It was great. Smooth, accurate, and he truly enjoyed being able to hit targets and my KYL rack. I think if the rifle wasn't precise, then that would have taken a lot of enjoyment out of it and may have frustrated him at a young age.

That being said, he quickly outgrew the stock. My plans were originally to rebarrel it and put it in a full length stock or chassis, but he got kind of attached to it as his first real gun, and I could tell he wanted to keep it original and even possibly hand it down to his kids eventually.

So, I picked up CZ 457 and immediately, put it in an XLR Chassis. The LOP adjustment goes incredibly short and it will grow with him forever. He still shoots it and it's still a competitive rifle for PRS22/NRL22.

So I actually make that my suggestion now. Pick up a used 457 and put it in a chassis with a lot of adjustment. That's way beyond $200 but that $200 rascal will only be useful for a year.

I spent a lot of $$$ on “kids” rifles and shotguns. I was warned by several that I was screwing up….
I bought an 870 20g youth model that could be up graded for free with a full size stock. It worked one year and he hated the way it recoiled. He shot my 1100 trap with better scores, even though the fit was not good. A year later and a growth spurt, he had zero interest in the 20 gauge.

I started with a WW model 67 as well and that is what I started my son with, iron sights and all.
Daughter was older and she started with a 10/22 when she was 7. Several mags but loaded one at a time.
I had also built several TC carbines for the “children”.

As mentioned a lot of money and little use.
Buddy has three girls, he spent a fair bit of pink and pretty rigs, now they sit collecting dust.

With the chassis rifles around today a d adjustable LOP, I would be inclined to study those pretty hard.

If given a choice between two guns, it’s interesting that kids or adults will often choose one that surprises us. I’ve come to accept that a fancy little rifle for the grandson is more for me to look at than for him, or at least he will outgrow it quickly and want to shoot something that makes no sense to me.

My strategy is to try to have two different rifles - the one he should like, and a rifle I like with a collapsible stock.

I looked hard at the cz457. But my kid would figure out it was expensive and then refuse to risk damaging it so it would just sit. So I figure I will get him a less expensive starter rifle and here in a few years get him a really good full size rifle.
The LGS didn't have the color I wanted so I've got the camo rascal ordered and on its way.
Really thought about the slightly heavier barreled one but I figure it will be easier to scope this one than find iron sights for the heavy barreled one.

I've realized that it was a much easier decision for my father, who gave me a Rem 514, than for to me, who was looking for something to keep my daughter's attention for more than 5 minutes. We ended up with a purple rascal with a fantastic trigger and great sights. Now to find the time to go shooting. E.

I bought a rascal for my kids and within a year they both outgrew it. Theres a short window for those guns I think. My oldest now shoots a savage mkii. Shes 9 this december. Another in between option that will run you around $250 is the savage mkii gy. It has a 12.9" length of pull and I see you want sub 12" i would suggest cutting an inch out of the stock and install a slip on pad. This keeps you more budget minded with a repeater.
