Best value in a 700 Clone

Tried a MacBros single shot. Fantastic.
Will use for the next build. Just a note, they use a trigger hanger that might need to be modified a little to fit into some chassis.
The trigger hanger is also a little finicky with certain triggers. It is a great action for the money, though!

Pete, Mine is a pretty good fit. I wouldn't want it any tighter for a hunting round. I was wrong as you can see from the above post it was $359. I purchased a SS long action marked US.
No, I don't sleep with Dave.
I have no problem with Remington's except for the bolt fit and primary extraction on many of them, which is the primary draw to the clones but there is no point in buying something with a sloppy bolt and bad Primary extraction, ergo the question. I have a real good SS Rem that I had the primary extraction of bolt fixed on but, well, always looking for a bargain. :)

Thanks

I guess the application matters. Do you need a clone to fit an existing stock? The best mass produced action would be a Bergara B14, My choice is a Barnard SMS - I have one in 6BR.I also own a "real 700" in BRX. If a Surgeon came along....

But if I didn't "need" to go the R700 route, I would add to myTikkas.

I've got two Big Horn TL3s. These have been my favorite I've owned. Seems every one shoots well, the interchangeable bolt head is great, toolless bolt breakdown, and pre-fits are usually in-stock. They aren't F-Class/Benchrest actions and I don't know about ignition timing or tuning them up like Speedy and Cortina always talk about, but they do quite well for me.

Budget brings to mind the Solus and the 307 builders action. No xp with either.

For a small fistful of dollars more an Origin can be had. Have 2 of these little gems now, smooth and slick and the crf is outstanding with the little br cases, tho push feed can be had if desired.

Fully self serviceable, bolt head and barrel swap, as well as all the 700 footprint perks.....no complaints from me.

I looked at the mag lengths today. Are they all set up for DBM's?

Thanks! -Al
I’ll have to measure, I THINK so. The one used so far I ended up milling out the mag well for a Bainey’s box that allowed 3.100” loaded OAL for that 270-08 AI project. Any short action needs machining to fit those. I’ll measure the dimensions tonight for you.

A few months ago I was asking some advise from @butchlambert on sleeving a 223 BF 700 bolt and about the rest of the work that he deemed necessary to do on 700 actions.

Instead of walking me through the process, he highly suggested that I check out the PTG Drakkar SA 223 BF.

I acquired one and could not be happier. 700 footprint, side bolt release, Sako type extractor, fluted bolt, threaded bolt handle and oversized knob provided. All for 539. The Drakker action, kind of looks like a Stiller

Screwed in a 223 barrel originally headspaced to a 700 action. Got extremely lucky, headspace checked out without any adjustment. Rifle even shoots fairly decent for a suppressed Whitetail hunting rifle.

Here is the finished product, bedded in Boyds thumbhole.

I’m the same except I went with the origin. Couldn’t be happier.

A few answers for questions on the 307 Action.
First is the M16 style extractor, this one is the 223 bf.

Second is the mag well pocket, it measures 3.081” OAL. An Accurate Mag WSM mag measures 3.060”, so these actions should readily take DBM w/out modifications.

It’s another option, and a very reasonable one at that IMO. Best value currently out there? Very likely.

Thanks for posting this. :)

Interesting that the PTG site shows the 'Ratherby' action using a modified 700 bolt with the standard 700 extractor. Did you order the M16 as an option?

Good shootin' :) -Al

These were the actual Weatherby 307 actions, I believe I paid $460ish for them…THEN I saw the BUNYA offering afterwards, if that’s the Ratherby, then I imagine they are as described. I did measure the extraction cam on these also and it’s right around .100”, which is at least .060” over any new 700 I’ve looked at in the last 5-6 years.
