Best Turkey hunt ever

Years ago in spring gobbler in Penna. I had a hen decoy about 20 yards in a field and I was in the edge of the woods calling. Almost right away about 8 or so jakes came out at the other side of the field (about 200 yds. away) they were stretching there necks looking at my decoy but wouldn't come over and they went back in the woods. I stayed there and kept calling about a hour and a half later they came back and they were stretching there necks and looking all of a sudden 2 of them came running across the field at my decoy, when they got to the decoy they turned around and ran back to where they came from. I probably could have shot one but I don't shoot jakes. I laughed to myself they reminded of young boys out looking for girls but were to shy to come over. It was my best turkey hunt ever even though I didn't get a bird.

I had one gobbling good the last morning of season about 6 years ago. He shut up and i figured he was either coming or was with a hen. An old man told me years ago that a gobbling turkey would come to the tree you were calling from. Never really believed that. Well I had set up facing the way I "thought" hed come from. I said to myself there is no way he will come to me through the thick stuff behind me. Well about an hour later I was pretty much asleep and a tree fell at the neighbors property and that turkey gobbled in my ear literally standing on the other side of the tree. He came around the tree and turned his head and looked at me as I looked at him. Of course he took off flying into the clear cut and never gave me a shot. I walked out of the woods smiling that day. It was something else.

Me from Texas and a friend from Iowa went turkey hunting years ago. It was a bad day not one came out so we called it a day. We were walking on a logging road on a curve when my friend said turkey on the road! There was a large tree in middle of the bend on the side of the road and we took cover behind it. I looked around expecting a gobbler walking along the road but I saw a bull elk standing about 50-60 feet away. He just looked at us and went up the side of the hill. Never seen anything that big move so silently through the brush. Anyhoo I looked to my friend and said "If that what you Iowa boys call a turkey I'd hate to see what an Iowa elk looks like!" That's been our best turkey hunt story.

He does want me to go pheasant hunting in Iowa....I'm a little concerned about the size of them birds.
