Best Quality way to open LC 5.56 Brass crimped Primer Pockets

I use the vld tool to be honest because it just kisses the area where it is crimped and doesn't leave the larger chamfer.

Have a look on the C&H site. They sell a crimp remover that does not involve cutting and is simple to set up and use.

3/16 will put a chatter free chamfer on those pockets. Also works awesome to deburr inner case mouth. They are much, much smoother than fluted cutters. And they're $9 at CHINAfreight.

Dillion for me as well. Do a YouTube search and you can automate a bit of the process. A tip , polish the swage tip to remove the bluing and lube the
cases with a bit of lanolin alcohol mix. Very smooth swaging.
Since the case heads vary in thickness by brand ,try to keep head stamps
the same. You can develop a feel for the ones that swage too short.
I dump those in a bucket and deal with them later.

Steve

I bought the tool Lyman makes for clearing the flash hole flange from the inside. I cut the handle off and chucked it up in the drill. I use it from the outside to cut out the crimp. A bonus is that it also makes all the flash holes the same diameter.

Ditto here, don't like the way the other cutters leave a big huge chamfer, a kiss with the VLD ID case mouth chamfering tool takes away the crimp without reducing the bore height or leaving a big nasty chamfer. When done with other inspection steps its not so bad. Kiss crimp, check pocket with swage gauge.

With that being said, I very much prefer the new uncrimped LC in 250ct bags ;), and the milsurp stuff is getting cycled out. Remnant of the component shortages from 08-15

Anybody tried this setup:

SwageIt.com

Seen 'em on FB, looks like a handy way if you have a 650 (or 550) with a case feeder...
If Dillon suspects you're using it based parts breakage, they'll void your warranty. Otherwise I've heard good things about it.

I use a 1050 for swaging.

This is why I buy swaged/prepped LC 5.56 brass. It's actually fully prepped but I still pass it through my dies to be sure. $90/K shipped is hard to beat. Currently sitting on several K for service rifle season.

I'd definitely NOT use the RCBS press-mounted setup. It works O.k., but doing that much brass is much more easily accomplished with a bench-mounted RCBS or Dillon swager.

Thanks once again to all of you!

As Funny as it may seem (Time wise from back in Dec. 21, 2015), I've not started this process! But oddly, I was just out in my storage shed and pulled 3K of them little rascals out to start on them with a Dillon Super Swager.

If you want to get a little exercise for the arm, come on by. The Beer is COLD!

All the best from this side of the mountain.

Steve M.

Also recommend the dillon super swage 600. I knocked out about 500 cases of Lake City brass tonight in about 30 minutes or so. I could have probably done it faster, but I was taking my time.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who procrastinates that bad! ;)

I dug out a batch of 1x LC brass last summer/fall... the Swage-It never really worked the way I wanted it to. The Dillon 600 worked pretty well, but while I always thought people were full of hooey saying that you really should sort by headstamp before using it or else you'd get varying amount of swage... turns out they're not wrong. Ended up using a primer pocket reamer in a cordless drill/driver. Slower than I'd like, and messy... but at this point I'm kind of over the 'need for speed'. I have a few thousand to do, and I can chip away at those as time/motivation allows.

YMMV,

Monte
