best prefit barrel for savage model 12? suggestions please.

I have a 6br McGowen 12 twist and a 6br cbi 8 twist both shoot extremely well and clean up great no copper issues. Wouldn't hesitate to use either one.

how much benefit would it be buying a blank and having a local Smith chamber and fit one? or would that help tune it for a specific load?

Chevytruck, I crossed the same bridge you did not too long ago. I contacted Jim Briggs with Northland Shooters Supply from the recommendation from forum members. I went with a 28"pre-fit Shilen S8 contour 1 in 8. I'm shooting Varget, CCI 250s and 107 Sierra MK and I've been very happy (bucks the wind well). Plus, Jim is a good guy to deal with. Hope this adds some more insight.

Jim Briggs @ Northland is a GREAT guy and extremely helpful! I stopped in there a few weeks ago to get the supplies for my first Savage build (small shank). Grabbed a 6-284 Norma chambered 26" Shilen select match 8 twist HV prefit, cut it to 22" and recrowned. Have 12 rds down the tube now for break-in, the last 3 went in the same hole. Time will tell if it that is a fluke or a hummer barrel (hoping for a hummer ;D).

I did notice that the throat is much longer than on my custom 'smith chambered 6-284 Win., 30" Hart 8 twist. Using the loads for that rifle in this new one and shooting MUCH better already, even with a big jump to the lands. Shooting 107's, RL-22, and Fed.match primers. Also, the Shilen crown was an 11 degree - but it's not any more.

This is my first experience with a pre-fit and with a Shilen, so far so good.

MY 6br did not like the 105Amax at all

I personally have found our 6BR and BRX barrels like Sierra smk 107's.

I have also experienced the same thing as you with the 105amax's.
