When dialing in a new .223, (for varmint bullets in the 40-55 grain range), my go-to powders are LT-32, Reloader 7, W-748, IMR 8208 XBR and TAC. It is not that the "old school" powders like H-4198 can't be just as accurate - but these powders have shown me that they are more accurate in more of the rifles I tried (25 or so now?) Rarely will I find a rifle that will shoot more than two of these to my liking - but it only takes one. And one of these works every time so far. It is pretty amazing how many other powders are "suitable" for the .223. I used to just about toast a barrel getting through load development with what I found to be the best. There are a few powders I don't even bother trying on any rifles anymore. While noted as recommended powders in many manuals - they never produced great accuracy to go along with the impressive velocity and case fill rates. I don't shoot enough of the heavier bullets to make an opinion.
