Best powder for 243

I have a Savage model 12 varmint in .243 with 9.25 twist. The only bullet and powder combo I've tried so far is Varget and 90g Bergers.
It is accurate, but wondering what else I should try.

Thanks,

Terry

Varget may be a tad too fast for the 243.

Don't know if there is a best, there are several that have been reported to work very well.

H4350
N160
7828SSC
H4831

I also have a Savage 243 (Predator Hunter model) with a 9.25" twist. My most accurate hunting load
is with 95 grain Nosler CT ballistic silver-tips.

44+ grains of H-4831sc gave me 2,945 fps and 1.5"-2" groups at 350 yards.

The 95 Bergers didn't shoot as well as the Nosler Combined Technology bullets. They (Noslers) are basically
the same as the 95 grain Ballistic Tip, except with the black oxide coating (Lubaloy?)

I will echo the load mentioned above.. The Mrs has a .243 9.25 twist and it has two loads that it shoots great. The one for coyotes is a 70grn B-tip on top of a stiff load of H380 and the other load for deer is a 95 grn nosler partition on top of a 44+ grn charge of H4831. Fed 210match primers and seated to mag length.

I also have loaded some with N-160 but stopped development as the H4831 loads shot so well and I had a lot more of it as opposed to N160.

I don't know why no one ever seems to recommend it around here, but I've always liked either of the 4895's for my 243. jd

In addition to the above recommendations:

1) RL-19 showed potential with the 90 grain Berger out of my 1:10 twist, 24" barrel. With limited load development, I was able to get consistent 0.5" groups at 100 yards with lower range charges - velocity was right around 2900 fps. When I get the time, I'm going to play with this combo to see how good I can get it to shoot.

2) For a hunting load, N-560 works well with the 95 grain Ballistic Tip. I'm getting 3019 fps with single digit SD's. Accuracy at 200 yards hovers around 1".

My 243 is nothing fancy, just an older Winchester Model 70 with a trigger job and bedded.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the info. I'm a Vihtavori fan, I'll try to get some N-160&165.

I have quite a bit of IMR 4064& 4350 so I'll try that too.

After a little web searching, I might try Sierra 85 game kings.

Anyone like 90g Lapua for long range?

It will depend on bullets, cases, and primers as well as your chamber. Slow powders generally go better with heavier bullets, fast powders with lighter bullets. Solids have higher engraving forces and generally like slower powders than their copper jacketed lead counter part. Case fill also has a roll in that powders that fill the case generally are more consistent. I've shot bullets from 55 to 105 grains through mine and have loads in powders like IMR3031, 4350, 4831, H414, W760 and a few others. Sometimes conventional loads pay off and sometimes something strange works better. I would have thought that 80 grain ballistic tips would work better with IMR4350 but my testing shows my average group size is better with IMR3031 and magnum primers. I like testing and have shot 100s of rounds with different loads in one day and repeated it several times throughout the year.

Many good suggestions above, but don't overlook IMR8208xbr. Highly recommended. Widely available.

Joe,

Could you elaborate? Hodgdon does not list 8208 for bullets heavier than 80grains. It's faster than Varget by a bit, I believe.
