Best long range 6mm choice

Everyone has their favorite for a variety of reasons. That being said, I'll put the 6MMAI up against any other cartridge for distance, case volume and accuracy. The brass is simple to develop and the 40 degree shoulder makes case trimming unnecessary. It's simply a great cartridge.

My favorite load with this bullet was a fairly full case of H4831sc, Rem 9 1/2 primers, and turned brass in a custom 243, blueprinted Rem M600, 27.5" Schneider barrel, 1-12 twist. The Sierra 85 gr HPBT was my go to bullet for everything from prairie dogs to whitetails for the last 500 rds until the barrel finally gave up the ghost. I squandered a very good barrel trying to shoot pasture rats at 400-800 yards with 60-70 grain bullets. I was under the mistaken assumption that a fast light bullet = long range shooting. Never had access to ballistic information (this was in the early 80's). Speed doesn't win over wind. Now much wiser & using a Dasher with a 1-10 twist hart using 10 grains less powder & 87 vmax's, much better efficiency, accuracy and range.

If you want to save any more powder than the 6x45, you might have to start necking up 221FB brass! I"m just guessing that your 6br doesn't have enough push for those blunt bullets? .243 is my fav, but to save a little powder, you can go a little shorter with the 6xc or creedmoor, or just a little shorter still, the 6x47L. I"ve always heard the gameking was the equal to the matchking, except it was a hunting bullet. I;m not surprised they shoot well for you.

I expect more powder is the answer but I would have surely liked to use less. I am unaware of a wildcat 221 fball necked up to 6mm, is there a name for it? Speaking of little, I shoot a 20 Mink, looks like a 2/3 length K hornet necked down to 20 cal. 9.0 gns of powder and a 35 gn pill, a hoot out to 250 yds.

You have the best of both worlds with the 6mm. You have inherit accuracy, economy, and the best of high velocity. 6mm cartridges beginning with the 6BR and going up the 6mm/284, with many in between. Three important factors barrel length and twist, bullet weight/length, and powder burn rate all effect velocity and economy(barrel life). It has been my experience that keeping velocity between 2950-3080 fps equals the best in accuracy and barrel life. You have two types of 6mm shooter, one who wants the flattest shooting rifle out there(3400-3800fps/600-1600 rounds of barrel life), and the other who wants the most accurate and economic to shoot 2950-3080fps/3000-3600 rounds of barrel life). Rarely do you hear the that the 6mm will provide one with both of these characteristics in one cartridge.

While the 6mm Rem AI is a great choice for LR varmint hunting, you really don't see many at LR BR matches or on the winners list. I thought about having one built, but the accuracy of the 6BR has me spoiled.
