best load for 75's out of a 6mm remington

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
Just fishing to see if you guys have a preferred powder for the standard 6mm remington. It is a shilen select match barrel on a savage long action, centerfeed. The twist is 1 in 12. Any help is appreciated. Jon

I agree with 40X Guy for bullet weights from ~60 - 100 grains but prefer the Hodgdon 4350 variety. My best load for 58 V-Max uses Varget and for 115 Berger VLDs, either H4831 SC or IMR 7828 SSC. The latter loads are somewhat specialized. If you had to have just one powder for 6mm, it would be 4350.

-have always had a Rem 6mm since the 50's.

For paper punching, & varmits, I settled on the Hornady 75 gr. V-Max. I have used H-4831, H-4350, & R-19.

for 105 A-Max's the three above work great too.

get excellent accuracy from all three powders, but R-19 with the 75 gr. gives me about 80 FPS more, & a tad more accuracy in my McGowan & Pac-Nor barrels.

as the others said, you can't go wrong with H-4350

my barrels are 1:9 twist

Special thanks to you guys for posting.I didnt think anyone shot this cartridge anymore. Thanks again! Jon

Jon,

the world is dependent on "marketing".

not the best is always bought. it's what marketing can convience you , that you need this item & it's the beset.

the 243 gets all the print, but the 6mm is a better cartridge.

that should start the flames ;D

Gene, agreed! I love my standard 6MM Remington's. The .243 is talked about everywhere, while the "unloved" 6MM has kind of been forgotten about.

Love the 6mm Remington!!! I've used more IMR 4350 than anything but that's only due to local availability.

I load for my father in law's Rem 700 (older one) using 70g Noslers and IMR 4064. That rifle will clover leaf just about anything you put through it.

I've currently got 70g Noslers loaded over R-17 to test in my 23" McGowen 12 twist mated to a Savage action. Once I get time to shoot, I'll pass on my findings.

You might look into the new Superformance powder as well. The numbers for 70g bullets are quite impressive.

To me the cartrige looks like an overgrown 22-250 case which I think is real sweet.I like the caliber, but there is only limited stuff in print.I have ken waters pet loads but most of the powders he uses are obsolete and the bullets arent made either. His books are useful but I wish somehow they got updated.

I shot a hot load of IMR 4064 and a fed 210 primer, 75g Sierra made a mess out of a coyote, very, very accurate at 3600 fps.

80g at 3500 in 26" 12T with 4064, Fed 210.

60g Sierra at 4000 shooting bug holes with Win 760.

I SURE LIKE MY 6MM VARMINT REM 700 1980 MODEL SHES A NICE PEIECE AND IT LOVES THE 75GR VMAX BUT IT PREFERS H-4831SC WORKS GREAT FOR HER :D

I like to use H380, 760/H414 and H4350 with my Ruger #1 6mm Rem and lighter varmint bullets.
I have always found this cartridge to be easy to load for, seems like about any powder in the correct burn range works good for me...good luck

My old 600 6mm remington my grandfather gave me is one of the main reasons I started reloading..Could only find ammo once a year right before deer season. I could only find only 100gr and the rifle likes 85gr. Glad to see I am not the only one who still loves it..

The most accurate hunting rifle I know is a mates custom 6mm Rem, shoots Win brass, RL17, 105gr Bergers @3250fps and into 1 1/4" @ 500 yds. o_O PB, rabbits @ 800+ yds. :)

This post has been going on for awhile and answers some of my questions. I had some success with H380 and Reloader 17 in my 6mm Rem (with Douglas 26", 1 in 12 twist, heavy barrel), but nothing like I used to get 50 years ago when I was shooting Hercules Reloader 21. H414 did not do well for me. Hercules Reloader 21 powder with 75 gr Sierra HP would consistently shoot half inch, one-hole groups, and I just shot up the last of my old handloads and they still performed great. Thus I'm in search of a new powder that will do as good in my rifle. Does anyone know what current powders would be very similar to the old Hercules Reloader 21?

Stiff load of 4831 with magnum primer. Killed thousands of Pa groundhogs with it. Very accurate.

Did you get the last breeding pair?

That was 50 years ago, no in my area the farmers shooting propane in the holes and igniting it along with eliminating fence rows did that. The one that was left became coyote food. 2 of us used that load for about 20 yrs. Goal was 200 per year each. Anything under 200 yds had to be shot offhand to count.Shot out original Rem 722 barrel, then a Douglass barrel then shot out a new Rem 700 Varmint barrel. In total probably less then some get in a single prairie dog excursion. The vast majority where given away and eaten. Shot many rounds out of those barrels at offhand shoots and running deer shoots in addition to groundhogs.

I saw encouraging signs from H4831 SC behind Berger 74-gr MEF Moly, WLR primer. Here's a couple of groups printed in preliminary node testing, but I then ran Tubb fire lapping bullets through it and switched to Speer 70-gr TNT. (Here 4-shot vertical group dimension denoted, ignoring breeze and concentating on vertical hold. Barrel is the original 1967 R700 Varmint Special, very first year of production!)
