Best Load for 30BR

I just recently bought a used 30BR pistol custom made W/Laminated rear grip stock built on a Model 12 target action right bolt left port. 17" McGown barrel w/muzzle break A beautifil gun. I have a variety of 308 bullets 110,125, and 150 have heavier but I feel this pistol will perform better with the afore mentioned bullets? I shoot for groups and do not shoot competition. The original owner said he shot H-4198 and 125 grain bullets with great success He shot 30.5 I can't seem to find any data so before I reload some I thought I would ask the people in the know. Thanks Lou

Interesting gun, Lou. Your friend is right, THE powder for 30BR is H4198 and common loads for the benchrest gang is 115 to 122 gr. bullets with 30.5 to 35.5 gr. H4198; start low and work up. Check your twist as the light (110, 125) bullets work best in 16-17 twist.

By the way, this site has some great 30BR info in it's cartridge guide section ...

Enjoy ...

Thanks ReedG. Like i said I am not a competition shooter at 74 i don't think this game is in the cards. Thanks for confirming the data given me for the 30BR. I have been reading the write ups on the 30BR. With the speeds obtained with the 30BR, I am going to try Deer hunting with this pistol. Every thing I have read is on competition shooting so trying deer hunting with this rig should be a hoot. Also I will try 110 grain bullets which I have a wide range of bullet makers, Berger, sierra, speer, & Nosler Etc for varmit hunting. The 30BR is very new to me as were the others in the BR family some time ago, first to come along was the 22BR In an Encore with a custom Bullberry barrel 15" w/a brake with hardly any recoil at all I can watch the ground hog getting wacked. Again Thanks for your reply Lou

For what it's worth, I recently bought a lightly used barrel made up for Savage rifles in .30BR

While I have zero experience with this barrel as of yet nor this cartridge, the previous owner of the tube sent his load book. He is a competitive shooter.

Though he worked only a while with this barrel as he was setting up for large shank barrels and Savage target actions while he was shooting this barrel he did find it like 125 gr. Speer TNTs and H4198 powder.

I believe his charge wts. ran around 31 to 33.5 gr. .......... your mileage will likely vary.

Also, after reviewing his notes it's interesting that lot changes in the same powder made for accuracy/charge wt. shifts!!

A small case like this is not very forgiving so be careful!!!

I also recall he ran 135 Bergers and the Speer's were more accurate in the barrel I bought from him and also a brief stint with 135 Sierras with the Bergers running second to the 125 gr. Speers.

I believe that the 1:16 twist is more conducive to the lighter weight and it's not a "brand thing" Ie. the over 125 gr. bullets are going to be problematic.

Speaking of deer hunting with a 30br, i just wonder if the Barnes 110gr TSX will stabilize in a 17" twist? Would be deadly.

If anyone has any of these bullets, what is the oal so I can run it through a stability calculator.
