Best hand primer ?

21st century Priming tools can have a tray or alps for feeding or can have mechanical stop to control depth. I own the mechanical stop variant it's pretty well made. That said, primers stop when they're fully seated so what does it really buy you? Try priming 1,000 rnds of .45 ACP and get back to me.

The problem with the tray system is it must have a 1-primer stop or you run the risk of castrophic primer tray detonation. So the goes the 21st century tray setup.

The best priming tool I've seen is the Dillion primer feeder found on Dillion progressive presses. It's safe, fast and consistent with an attentive operator. I'm considering upgrading my single stage competitions loads to a 550/650 with a Uniqtec CNC die plate.

I hear about primer trays exploding but I have never met or know of an actual incident. I punch out live primers all the time with no problem and my understanding of primers is that it takes a hard and fast blow to set one off. Is primers exploding in the tray a myth ? How do you set off a primer with a hand primer ?

If the tray of primers did ignite in the tray what would it look like. Best I can tell there would be a succession of white hot flashes and some smoke and your plastic tray would be on fire. Nothing catastrophic other than the damage to the tray is all I can see coming of it.

You can set one off by seating to hard. I set 15 off one time. Anvils sticking in the ceiling and some went into my fingers. You would not believe the power of a primer. I know a guy that showed another guy how his anealer worked. The only thing was it wasn't a scrap case like he thought and had a primer in it. The primer went off and the case flew across the room. He told the guy the primer is in my stomach. The guy said your kidding and he showed him the hole in his shirt. He went to the ER and they x-rayed it. They said they would do more damage trying to remove it then to let it in. Matt

Matt is right, a tray of primers going off is no joke.

A friend of mine who is known to be ham fisted set one tray off and not only did he have anvils in the ceiling but it blow his overhead fluorescence light up and that came down on him. When you work with primers remember it is both power and speed that sets them off. You can slowly crush a primer and it will not go off but going fast and hard is where the danger is.

I still want to know what the big deal about “precision priming” is all about?

So basically I would need to be slamming the primers home as fast and hard as humanly possible but it's doable. I've crushed a dozen or so primers over the years trying to put a second primer into a case I had already primed and nothing went off and I seat primers slowly so I don't crush them. I'm not going to worry about primers igniting in my hand primer
A primer tray on the 21st century tool sounds intriguing but it's not made with one anymore.

Jlow , precision priming for me means the pocket has a uniformed cup and the primer is seated firmly against the bottom but not crushed. Primer ram stops sound like a great way to have misfires from unseated primers but what do I know ?

I want to believe you but I have primed and shot tens of thousands of rounds and never had one not go off. Of course, I do QC all my loaded rounds before I shoot them and reseat if they are proud.

I can see using something that consistently seat primers well for functional reasons but I am just having a hard time seeing priming tools that can seat primers to the thousand for precision and ballistic reasons.

Everyone that says you don't want a primer going off or a tray full, are correct! One at a time for me I know what they can do, they have enough power to jam a bullet into the lands. Daveinjax if when you seat a primer then turn it primer up in the tray you won't have that problem! So I choose to us the 21st Century one at a time I'm in no hurry to see GOD.

I use the 21st Century single primer tool and love it. Used the Lee in the past with both round and square tray with mixed success. Certainly if you've got a progressive press setup, that's something else, but for the BR loading a the range that I do, or even the several hundred cases to get ready for prairie dogging, the single primer way is the way for me. Don

Bottom line is that I want a tray of primers or another self feed system in a high quality tool that the primer ram doesn't hang in the up position and seats with good enough feel I can tell when they're properly seated. I'm not in the least bit concerned about the primers going off. Anyone have a tray type 21st Century hand primer they want to get rid of ?

I have the 21st century unit for use with the Lee trays and much prefer it with the old style trays rather than the new "safer" square trays. The newer trays seem to feed less reliably and it's harder to see tipped primers.
Great quality on the 21 century tools!
I always wear glasses when priming with any of my several priming tools.

Great news I think ! I just got off the phone with John at 21st Century and he's making a new hand primer that uses the Lee square trays. It's a new stainless steel model. It's not up on the site yet ( I believe he said the tech dept is on vacation ) but give him a call if it's what you're looking for.

After going through 3 or 4 RCBS hand primers I finally got something that is simple and works well, an RCBS bench primer.
