best deer hunting bullet for whitetail in 6.5mm Creedmoor?

129g LRAB, go ahead and buy 10 boxes when you find them on sale.. They were easy to tune in the 6.5x47 Lapua and 6.5 creed.

I have killed a bunch of deer with a 6.5x55 using the old Hornady 129gr SPT. I would guess that the Creedmoor would have the same great results. I actually have a 6.5 CM, but the MDC restricted centerfire use last season in the areas I hunt, so I didn't get to try my 6.5 CM on a deer yet.

I have used Hornady 129gr Interlocks for years in a 260 Reminton and 6.5 CM to take Mule Deer and Whitetails from 50yd to 350yd and they work just fine. I see Hornady is using that bullet in their "Whitetail Hunter" brand. If you don,t reload, that would be a good choice. I've never recovered one - all passed through.

I might get shamed on this forum for admitting it, but my wife and I took a 6.5 Creedmoor to South Africa in late August as our second rifle. (original plan was to just shoot tiny stuff with a 22 Hornet but the PH asked for something bigger due to a baboon problem) Due to time constraints, I used factory Federal ammo with the 130 grain Bergert OTM bullet. We ended up shooting about 18 animals including 2 kudu, a wildebeest and a hartebeest with that cartridge. None of the animals took more than one step and fell over, most just dropped right there. Most of the shots were 200-400 yards away. Admittedly, the rifle is amazingly accurate with this factory ammo. We wished for nothing more from the rifle or the ammo. The PH was so impressed, I left him the remaining 70 rounds and he was going to get a 6.5 Creedmoor for clients to use.

Dude! Tell us about the baboon shooting!

Dude! Tell us about the baboon shooting!
Only saw one bunch of baboons on this trip, feeding in a field right off a highway. They are hunted constantly so they group of 5 actually had a "guard" on the edge of the road watching for vehicles to slow down. We drove past, turned around behind a hill and I got in the back of the truck. The moment we rolled to a stop 300 plus yards away, they were running for the hills. Never saw them as they were behind a small hill. 6 years ago, I shot 2. One was the alpha male of a group of about 20. I had already shot one adult a few moments before. As they rest ran up into the cliffs, the alpha stood on a ledge about half way up the cliff baring fangs and screaming at us. That was fun. I told them I just wanted the skull and wish I would have done a shoulder mount. Deeply wrinkled face, huge fangs, really cool cape of hair. I had the opportunity to shoot about a dozen more as they ran around on the cliff in confusion but my trophy fee list showed $500 for a baboon you I quickly decided 2 was enough. I should have negotiated in advance with the PH and the property owner that morning as the property owner told me to shoot all I saw. I know for next time. Some places won't charge at all for them. They were the smartest animal we hunted....

Very smart animals but devastating to farms, they learn quickly where the bunny huggers are for protection and will do their raids on farms/orchards and then head back as soon as they get pressured. Weeks will past before they return, also a animal you do not want to confront or have backup in a corner. Their K9s are quite a bit bigger than a Lions and they fight very dirty

Hardly a sample size I know...I shoot Hornady 147 grain ELDX out of my GAP crusader 6.5CM. It shoots very tiny groups. I shot a deer at ~100 yards this season, and it leveled him. It was front shoulder shot. Bullet didn’t exit. In my 20 years of deer hunting I have never had a DRT shot. There’s always some kind of tracking. I was impressed. But like I said one is hardly a sample size.

"For whitetails at any normal range, I say use the good ol 139gr Hornady SP. worked GREAT out of my 6.5x55 Win 70 fwt 25 years ago, and I bet it would work great out of a creedmoor today. I still have 4 boxes of those with orange price stickers for $9.95 on them."

I think you mean 129 gr Hornady bullet. Hornady never made a .264 bullet in 139 gr. They do in .284.

You would be correct sir! As I said...it was 25 yrs ago:)

I use the same bullet I use in any 6.5, the 140 Berger VLD. Accurate and devastating near or far.
