Best custom action in 700 footprint

A Kelbly Atlas can be the basis of a great hunting rifle. But it sounds like you're building a BR rifle. Limiting yourself to a R700 footprint just because you already have the stock is false economy. My advice is to sell the R700 stock and buy a good used dedicated BR rifle that has a chance to be competitive. If you have the money and time, commission a new BR rifle from a smith with winning credentials.

But for a repeating hunting rifle I love my Atlas Tactical.

It is how the hammer gets cocked? Something is dragging in the firing pin? I am still not sure what the definition of "timing" is... Still seems to be a general term to do anything with the bolt. I have asked several people, and have yet to get a precise answer for "timing" work, and what it is.

If you felt a Borden then you would understand right away, the bolt closes with one finger, so smooth. I love my BordenBRM RBLP Drop port, the drop port is nice.

Is their a reason you have to have a left port on the right bolt action? If not, Kelblys Tactical action is the best bang for the buck out their. I have used every 700 foot print action out their and then some. You get a lot of options and quality and they can be had for 925.00 plus it is a Kelbly, they have been making top notch actions longer than any one out their. You will not find a better group of people to deal with period.

I am getting a Single shot for target, and it will spend most of its life in a benchrest stock. I will be shooting short line and 600 matches. I shoot 6BR and 243. Maybe even a 1000 yard this year. Probably get a Jewel varmint trigger or possibly the new Rifle Basix BR trigger.

well first thing you need to do is decide who is going.to build this rifle for you. most custom rifle builders have preferences about actions and barrels they like to work with. pick one and listen to him.

second thing is a short line bench rifle is designed much differently than a 600 to 1000 yrd gun. neither will be a rifle you will hunt with. you are going to have to make some decisions here.

i would look on benchrest central at their classified section and buy used. it will save you time and money. see if that is really what you want.to.do. a panda 6ppc will fill those short.range needs. i believe i would go bat for 600 to 1000. Chambering? everything from the lowly 6BR through the hot rodded 6brs seems the BRA is popular now but the dasher is still a good one all the way up to the 284 winchester. you pick

now to my other question. what will be the primary use of this rifle? i do love a 6BR. very versatile round but not the best for everything.

You do not need a lathe any more... A Criterion barrel has won at the national level now. And I have a company that will be making my barrels on Bartlein blanks.

Yes. All of my rifles are nut barrels now. Nut barrels and prefit configurations are the future. I mean think about. If you combine a perfectly machined action with a perfectly machined barrel, no fitting is necessary. And the nut barrel shoots exactly the same as a shouldered barrel, and installation is easy. Once I set the nut I loctite them in place and then they can be removed and replaced the same as a shouldered barrel on any given action.

And no nut is necessary, either. If boltface to shoulder and thread dimensions are held to very close tolerances, as they are in custom actions, any competent machinist can fit and chamber without having the action in hand. And at least some actions (e.g., Kelbly) even have the action threads timed so that barrel engraving is in the correct location regardless of which action it is screwed into. Try that with a nut.

So you said Benchrest and Remington foot print. Dual port or drop port is mandatory. These are the one I know that will do it.

Borden Mountaineer cone bolt Drop port, I think he will do a dual port also

Defiance rebel drop port, Not in love with the remington extractor they use in these though, They CAN be problematic in dropports.

Bat VR, they will do a dual port cone bolt in this action last

Those are the only 3 I know for sure. Personally I would be ordering a mountaineer in a dual port or the Bat VR dual port. Bordens are the best deal. Timing work is already done. He also has a new integral lug model coming out. If you get away from Rem clone your options open up. But theres nothing wrong with the 700 footprint for a BR action.

Can you confirm Bat will do a coned bolt on the VR with a RBLPRE? I could not order it with my last order with them.

The engraving goes around the diameter. No need to align it.

I will say it again, in ten years prefit rifles will equal or surpass in number in COMPETITIVE rifle sports.

I am watching it right now, those companies that have spent tons of money on super precision CNC machines to make black rifles have figured out they can make bolt rifle parts.... and they can make them with crazy levels of repeatability. I mean compared to an AR15, a Remington 700 is a very simple device in terms of parts compatibility. These companies need the work.

My new barrels are going to be made by Craddock Precision. They made my AR10 barrel, and it is a work of ART. And they have begun to produce Remmage barrel as of this month. A Remmage barrel is baby stuff compared to a match grade AR10 barrel, and they use the latest and greatest CNC technology (as I am sure the action makers like Kelbly, Bordon, BAT, etc etc do too). And they use Bartlein blanks. Let's not make a monkey wrench into a space shuttle. It simply isn't.

Accurate shooter just put an article on Facebook the other day and they were shooting F Class with a CNC machined /carbon molded skeleton stock and were just raving about how superior it was ... Times are changing. You just hide and watch!!!
