Best Bullets for 280 Remington

I picked up a Jarrett rifle in 280AI Remington. Any recommendations on a good 200 to 300 yard bullet for deer? Make, type and grain?

Just about anything in the 140-150 grain range will plant a deer with authority at those ranges. Even old-school cup and core bullets are good but no doubt you’ll get plenty of suggestions for heavy, high BC esoteric projectiles. The 280AI is a deer harvesting machine. No need to overthink it.

I killed a ton of deer with a 280 rem using federal 140 factory ammo that back then were probably sierra game kings. Out to 300 it worked great. The Remington core lokt was good too, possibly better.
One of the worst was the 140 ballistic tip. It did not hold together well enough in my opinion though it did work well. It just kind of edploded.
I killed one elk with 160 accubonds. I am not sure a standard 280 drives them hard enough. Since it's the only elk I've shot, I don't have much to compare it to.

All the above.
I've used 120-150gr Ballistic Tips with good results in standard 280 Rem.
Add in the 140gr Berger VLD.
Will be trying the 150gr ABLR this year.
Groups are promising.

I have been using a .280 since its inception. I have killed deer from close to near 800 yds Never more than 1 shot. For 500 yds and under 139 Hornaday Spire points has been my go to bullet. When setting up for 500 and beyond the Speer 160 boattail SP has led to numerous 1 shot kills.I have heard all kind of stories on the Sierra MATCH Kings. Three years ago I killed an 8 pt Pa buck in a hard rain as it stood facing me. Only shot I had was offhand due to terrain. It was down before I got back in the scope, was like the old shiloutte days. Chest cavity looked like a grenade went off in it. It's not the bullet in my mind near as much as shot placement. It's a great deer cartridge. Accurate with moderate recoil.

I'v been using a 280 Ackley for about 25 years for deer hunting in Minnesota. I have used most bullets in the 140 gr range. All killed very good but some had a lot of meat damage and I'm a meat hunter so I wanted a bullet that didn't blow up. I did kill a cow elk at 330 yards with the 280 AL. The only bullet I use is the 140 Noster Partitions it does ever thing I want in a hunting bullet.

I've got a .280 Rem Mountain Rifle. My deer load has typically been a 154 Hornady Interlock. My bear load is a 175gr Nosler Partition. The 175 shoots 1.25" lower than the 154....so no need to change my hunting zero. I've also been using some New Old Stock Norma Factory ammo that I found in a hole in the wall gun shop. It uses something like a 147gr bullet similar looking to the current Oryx (I forget the exact weight....it's listed in grams on the box). All three of them quickly and cleanly put deer on the ground. I was given some 139gr BTSP Hornady's and I'll work up a load for them eventually. For the deer in my area (Central and Western PA) 200lbs is typical nowadays. These bullets have worked well for my shots (neck, shoulder, heart) for the ranges I've killed deer (5 yards - 300 yards.)

Good Luck,
Ross

I've been using a .280 Ackley for several seasons now, great round. I've had very good results with the 140 Accubond running around 3100 and the 150 Ballistic Tip around 2950. The BT's are stupid accurate in my gun and hold together really well at that speed. Either will serve you well 300 and in.

Note the range and variety of bullets suggested in all the above posts. With that kind of selection, how could you go wrong choosing any of them? My thought is that the cartridge is a near perfect selection for deer or elk hunting given the range of bullet styles and weights especially when the yardage is about 300 yards or less.

I started shooting the .280 AI when Nosler released the test batches for their AI brass being made available to the public later. Originally I used the Berger Classic Hunters for testing then I switched to the Nosler Partition and now I shoot the Nosler E-Tip.

Check to see what's available and load some test ammunition.

Enjoy!

They do make ammo.

I have 2-280AI. I50gr AB used H-4831sc load from Nosler manual #9. My other one I've got some R-26 so going to try Nosler 175gr for elk load.
