best bullet for 308 with 20 inch barrel and 1 in 10 twist

You know,I really appreciate all of your replys, etc

But of the post I read where you say what you use and how
good it is,you never mention the TWIST in your barrel..Maybe this
is of little importance, but I think it does make a difference,,

But still,it is good to have others out there, that are willing to share
their own experince's....Thanks Guys

GOD BLESS AMERICA

I have had good luck with the new AR Comp powder and the 155gr Sierra Palma. Last 100 yard 3 shots. Mine has a 20 inch barrel and the load is running 2740fps

gatorman, I had the same rifle but the twist is 1:12 for .308

The 20" SPS Tac shoots great for an out of box rifle (I'm normally a Savage fan). The best group that I ever got was just under .3 MOA at 100 (under .3")

The load I used was:

168g Hornady Amax
Hornady Match Brass
CCI Primers
42.5g IMR XBR 8208 (42g gave me slightly wider group).

I shot that group off a bipod too :)

You might want to try some Berger VLDs if nothing else is working or some of their other bullets in the 155g range. For a 1:12 twist I wouldn't be going over 168 but the 168 Amax shot awesome for me.

Until I find that light bullet load,I will continue with the 175 grain smk....The Horn.168 do not shoot well at all..But it would be nice to zing a light bullet out there with good accuracy....Thanks-you have been helpful...John

I say try hogden benchmark powder with the 125 nosler ballistic tips. this powder has been very accurate and is intended for .223 size cartridges or the .308 with light bullets. Also not temp sensitive! Also would help a little with you shoulder with the lighter bullets.

I have an AR10 with a 20 inch barrel that shoots lights out. I use blc2 and h335 with the 168 hornady match "bullets". I can shoot a ragged hole with it on my good days as I shake from meds sometime's. I think you are giving up too quickly on the 168's.

I have a remmy LTR, an SPS tactical AAC, and a 700 P. All have 10 twists on them and each of them shoot similar loads very well. I have one custom built out of an LTR with an 11 twist but it's a different animal. In my SPS I shoot 155 A-maxes with 46.0 gr of H4895 seated way out there as every one of my remmy barrels has an extremely long throat. In my LTR I shoot 155 Berger VLD's over 47.0 grains of Varget. In my 700P I shoot 155 Palma MK's over 43.2 gr of AR Comp or 48.5-49.5 gr of CFE 223. Each rifle groups under 1/2 moa at 200 yards. I have swapped loads between my SPS and LTR and groups are still very respectful. The main reason each shoots a different bullet is for ease of seperation. The only issue is that to obtain top accuracy with your factory barrel you have to seat the bullet out so far that using the magazine is not possible. Hope this helps.

Not always the case. My Remington 700SS 5R Milspec does far better with bullets seated at magazine length, or real close, rather than those rounds I seat for a shorter jump.

Every rifle/bullet/load combination will perform differently. Some rifles do quite well with large amounts of freebore.

My pet loads for 175 SMKs in my 1:10 twist barrels:

LC brass
41.7 IMR 4064
Remington 9 1/2 primer
175 SMK seated 2.225 base to ogive

Remington brass
42.5 IMR 4064
Remington 9 1/2 primer
175 SMK seated 2.225 base to ogive

I can substitute the 180 grain Sierra Gameking with either load and no change in impact.

When I'm on the ball, these will shoot under 1/3 moa.

I recently tried the 125 SST Hornady in my Tikka T3, 308 with H4895. The reason I went to this bullet was for recoil reduction. This bullet shoots reasonably accurate with this combo for a light weight sporter rifle, groups under an inch at 100 yards.

I find the similar results with my Rem 700 5R Milspec (11.25T), I have good results with 168 and 175 at book mag length specs as well. Also the Fed GMM in 168 and 175 seem to work quite well too. As such they seem to be a benchmark for my handloading to equal or better as a goal.

Looking for a good bullet to use for F Class shoots in my 308 Rem 700 sps tactical
rifle with 20 inch barrel...Range will be 250 yards either prone or bench..
Tried 168 grain match bullets with no accuracy at all....
If anyone has any ideas what works,I would love to hear your ideas and thoughts....
Or,is it too much to even be asking for..Thanks.... :-\

Gatorman. I shoot a Rem 700 SPS Varmint which is 26 inch and a 1 in 12 twist. Twist is a very important part of the equation. I use 168 and 175 SMKs with 42.5-43.5 gr of Varget or IMR 4064, loaded to 2.800. Win brass and primer. Nothing special or expensive.

Since you have a tighter twist and subject to your powder/powder charge, you may need to simply launch those a little slower. None of my factory Rem 700s like hot loads. Also, I've always found SMKs to be very forgiving for seating depth and easy to tune. SMKs generally do well jumping, not jamming.

Hope this helps you save time and $.

I shoot a Remington 700 started out as a LTR 308 Cal. 20" barrel 1-12 twist . The powder that worked best for my rifle is IMR 4064 the bullets are Sierra 168 gr.HPBT MK also Hornady 168 gr. A - Max Both are very accurate bullets. I full length size .001 case headspace & seat .002 off the lands , works for me . After 4000+ rounds through the barrel I had it completely blueprinted an had a RockCreek M24 5R rifling 11.27 twist 20" barrel installed . Using the same powder & bullets .

You need to stick with the 1.5" groups for a while and work on reading the wind, trigger control. These are going to be more important than getting the group size smaller at 250 yds. You can expect lighter bullets to be more wind sensitive so 168s or 155s is preferable. We all need more trigger time, because that is the biggest contributor to precision shooting (except maybe for luck). Good shooting!

I'm surmising from your previous posts that you've tried Hornady 168s. I'd be curious if you've tried SMK in 168, and if those also grouped poorly, as, TBH, if you can't get a reasonable group out of a 168 SMK, I'd guess the problem not to be the bullet.
